Hi all,

Can anybody tell me why my engine sounds really loud? Ok its a diesel so i expect it to sound a little noisy but it sounds like an old tractor! its a lot louder than my mates disco's, It runs ok apart from being sluggish at pull off (i will be doing the fix listed in here) just sounds loud.

Its a 97 300tdi manual with 85k on the clock, fairly well maintained engine.

Thanks
Crofty.

Search James Martin posts,he explains the rule of nine and various other useful tips

Admin !! This would make a great FAQ/sticky...it keeps coming up

Low miles for the age...give it a couple of oil changes and do the valve gaps,see if that helps.When was the timimg belt last done? Does the cold start advance to the pump have undue play ? That could possibly cause knocking until the engine warms up , due to timing not adjusting for temp.

Mine has done 116000M (S reg) and is noisier than a bloke at works 250000M (P reg), his has a bit of black rubber on top of the rocker cover that mine hasn't got, he recons it's that. Don't know where to get one though.

Hi Crofty, it could mean any or all of the following:

1. Tappets need setting;
2. Timing needs re-setting;
3. Engine needs an oil & filter change;
4. Low oil pressure;

It's called an acoustic cover and Land Rover charge the earth for them (over £100 I seem to recall)! I got mine for £17 off ebaY but they don't seem to come up very often. They are easy to fit (3 bolts) but they DO tame the engine noise noticeably, and reduce the din coming into my 90's cabin through the gunslits. :D

Even so, it's probably best to check the engine adjustments first before smothering the din!

:)

I don't know if any one can varify this but i been told buy a couple of lads with discos that they removed them cos they catch fire,how true this is i don't know but i aint seen many on 200 and 300 engines .

I'd like to jump in on this thread as i've just had my disco 300tdi engine rebuilt.It sounded smooth when first started but was knocking like hell after it's first proper run.Initially it was found that 2 of the con rod caps hadn't been torqued up fully,so that was done and tried again-better at first,but then sounds like a tin can full of bolts.The sound is more from the back of the engine.When the rockers were removed and the motor turned over,it sounds sweet (for a landy) but when back together again and started,it's noisy as hell.Any ideas greatfully recieved.

I have an old 200TDi Disco with 113k on the clock. Just done a full service including tappets although have not changed the timing belt.

The engine seems to be quieter now although the biggest difference came the next day when i replaced the centre silencer with a straight through pipe. The engine seems much quieter now.

However it seems to lack power and run noisier until warm. What is the cold start advance thingy and Vac pump have to do with these?

Sorry if I am stupid :)

I think Crofty is talking about a TDi 300, so no bolts to hold the acoustic cover.

Will be checking all these, starting 1,3,4,2.
Whats the best way to check the oil pressure?

Crofty.
