Noisy clutch thrust bearing

Sounds like my clutch release bearing is on the way out, gives a whirring sound when the clutch pedal is fully depressed, sound disappears when released again, gear selecting is fine, pulls away with no clutch slip just noisy which is really irritating. I know I,ll probably have to wait till it dies altogether and then have all the clutch assembley renewed, after only 55,000 miles!! not a very good advert for Landrover that is it! any one with any ideas how I could quieten the noise apart from buying earplugs!:(:(
 
Mine is exactly the opposite to yours, it whirs when the clutch is up in neutral???

I don't think there is any option apart from changing it or putting up with it to be fair....
 
55,000 miles of gear changing is a good advert! if thats the original its already done about 10K over its expected life, dont be so harsh!

No way to quieten it down, when it starts to feel reall gritty and graunchy get it sorted as the bearings will be breaking up.
Always recommend replacing the whole clutch assembly together, some just replace the friction plate then moan when the bearing goes, false economy the bearings the cheap bit. :)

Is that right? - the scheduled replacement interval for clutch release bearings is about 50K miles? That sounds like a very short lifetime to me, I've had tyres last longer.

I've just got my 99 Diesel with 85K miles on the clock back on the road after an IRD rebuild and associated strip and reinstall of props & drive shaft, new lubricants in gearbox etc. Took it for a test drive being very cautious and hyper sensitive to any strange noises. It all went well, everything seemed and sounded normal. When I got back on the drive though I just happened to notice that when I pushed the clutch in there were no noises what so ever (apart from engine!), but when I released the clutch (in neutral) there is a very faint whiring noise.

Its obviously nothing that I've worked on because the car was in neutral and at a stand still. Could only be the gearbox or clutch. I'm not even sure if its 'normal' or not, its such a faint noise that I probably wouldn't have noticed it before.

Any ideas on whether I should be concerned?

Clutch release bearings can fail in 50K miles!! More often than not it's due to the release mech seizing, this holds the bearing in firm contact with the cover which overheats the bearing driving out the grease. Result= premature failure.
It sounds like you could have a slightly noise input shaft bearing, it's common on the PG1 box and of no real consequence unless the input shaft oil seal leaks too.

Thanks Nodge. Before I bolt the drip pan back on I'll have another look around to make sure there's no signs of oil around the gearbox - mind you presumably if the input shaft seal is leaking it would route inside the bell housing and no telling where any trace would be.

Both the input shaft oil seal and crank oil seal will show oil dripping from the drilling in the bottom of the bell housing. Black oil would be crank oil seal, gold to brown would be gear oil ;)
 
Good point you have there Nodge about the input shaft, I did let it cross my mind for a moment and then buried my head in the sand again!! I should really check it out whilst the weather is holding up, its gotta be cheaper and easier to do than a whole new clutch assembly. have to admit Ive never done a replacement input shaft oil seal, any pointers anyone?
