Hi to everyone, I'm trying to fix with passion all the little presents that the time gives to my Defender (besides experience).

It's some times that when i go at low speed and I brake and stop the car I hear coming from the back of a dull thud as if someone swallows strongly.
In addition when going at the speed of 70-80 km/h I steer to the left (if I do this at the right it's ok) and an i go with the left tyres on a hole or an imperfection of the street I hear a loud noise TAC.

I think rear bushes has to be changed. I would like to know your own opinion, and especially if I can do it myself or is it better to have it done by a mechanic.

Thanks

sit under the rear and the "A" frame ball joint should not lift or free play by hand or with with pry bar

I tryed checking the A-frame for play or wear but also with the help of some tools I have not found anything. Maybe more strength is needed.

To have a good chance of solving the problem and make a good thing I should replace:

2x NTC1772 (Bottom link bush)
2x NTC1773 (Rear top links bush)
2x NTC9027 (Flexi mounting bush and retainer)
1x ANR1799 (A-Frame ball joint)

So I hope to do even more 100.000km

To make this work, although I would like to do it on my own I think it's a good idea to go to a mechanic. Do you think also a general mechanic can do this work or specific knowledge is necessary?

Thanks

Okay this noise is solvable, lets work through it

The A frame ball joint is common and will cause a knocking like a large stone hitting something. If the rubber dust cap is in tact and you can find no wear then it is less likely to be the ball joint.
The ball joint carrier can be removed from a supported vehicle, but a hydraulic press is needed to remove and refit ball joint to carrier and it is a pig generally to get back in.

It is also possible you have a noisy suspension damper-this would give the noise of a metallic thud where it has worn internally
as the Armstrong OE figment are only £24-30 a pair new in uk.

Dampers are an easier diy job and a plumbers stilson wrench pictured below can be used to hold old damper body to undo it if corroded badly as the flat on damper will round off if thread is badly corroded

refit with spanner and socket on ratchet, do not use stilsons for refitting
