Hi just bought a freelander 2.0 td for the winter and it has started making a funny noise at the rear or that's where it sounds like it is coming from
It only seems to do it when ur in 4th or 5th and doing 3000rpm+ but when you take foot of the gas or put in neutral it stops Had at look at the rear prop bearing and cv joints all seems ok Any help would be great full

This appears to be engine rev related rather than road speed related.

The noise is probably a hole in the exhaust or a loose baffle in the silencer box that is vibrating.

Another thing to look at is the bushes on the rear diff, mainly the bottom one. This has a tendancy to rip itself to pieces and under load in high gears a whine comes from the rear of the car.
Good luck

I get noise front the rear at upto 40mph, I have but it down to rear diff bearings.

I dont get the noise at higer speeds revs.

Thanks MHM if you are replying to me, the tyres are a couple of months old, Wrangler ATRs. I had the old one put on the front and the new ones on the rear.

I had the noise before the tyres were changed.

If its is engine rev related it cannot be anything on the back axle or prop shaft since these are mechanically coupled to road speed.
Could be a vibration of the exhaust system. Have you checked that all the clips and supports are tight/present?
Have you held it in a lower gear at 3000 rpm for some time to see if the noise builds up? This would prove whether it was road or enfine frequency dependent.
