Hi guys just joined and bought a freelander td4 s on a 54plate.

Done some looking around and think it may be the fuel pump on the back driver sidr wheel.

When key is in position two I can hear a humming noise. guessing the fuel pump is on. Then when the car is started it whines and the the other noise that follows I could describe as (like when an old desktop computer used to load a programme. You could hear the noise of it loading ha) .

do I need to replace the fuel pump if so I saw it seems a simple enough task. I used to have addefender so dont mind having a go myself.

Im in Doncaster area so is there place with reasonable prices or is Internet better? Thanks

yeah that's normal

Then when the car is started it whines and the the other noise that follows I could describe as (like when an old desktop computer used to load a programme. You could hear the noise of it loading ha) .

l.p. fuel pump and filter could do with looking at ..
i.e. to find out when or if either has been replaced ..

the lp fuel pump does have a finite lifespan
in that the bushes wear out on the elec. motor
and the thing can't be taken apart for repair ..
it's a replacement job .. and best to replace with the LR oem ( bosch ) item ..
there are cheaper but they usually fail sooner ..

if the motor has more than 80k miles on it ..
the l.p. pump Could be on it's last legs ..

if your unsure when the filter was changed .. best to change it ..

and drain the sedimenter at least once per year ..
maybe best just before winter .. i.e. to drain whatever water may have collected ..

to avoid water or diesel bug contamination ..
good idea to use 'diesel rhino' with the fuel ( google it )

if you decide to replace the lp pump and the filter ..
may as well remove the whole mounting bracket .. clean from rust .. paint it
replace the probably rusted bolts .. etc etc ..

Brilliant thank you!

If I find a YouTube video changing it I should be fine.

Whats the l.p mean when you said l.p fuel pump?

Its got about 130k I think. It had been in 2wd for along time as told it was better fuel economy but we asked the guy to install the prop back.

On a 2005 TD4 its located at the drivers side rear wheel arch just forward of the wheel. There is a plastic housing thats bolted up to the underside of the floor pan (2 bolts) and the whole assembly drops down and includes the fuel filter and water trap.

The fuel hose connectors are the quick release type, just squeeze the 2 tabs and pull off.

The pump just slides out of the housing. When fitting a replacement I would recommend a Land Rover part as a replacement - I fitted 2 after market ones to start with and they were so noisy.

Usually as a quick fix to get it moving, turn on the ignition and give the plastic housing a tap - its often enough to get the pump running again so you can move the car but engine power may come and go along with the engine light flashing on and off.

Thanks. Yes thats where the noise is. No engine light on yet and it runs fine as far as I can tellbut I can hear the noise so thought something was wrong

Hi there,
my freelander has just developed the exact same issue - desktop loading noise describes it perfectly -have u resolved it by replacing the pump?

This retro desktop computer noises sounds cool - the first plus point for the TD4 over the L Series that I've come across. Does it also do a little jingle when you power up and shutdown?

I had/have the same noise from my pump/filter/FBH pump, took it of the car as an whole so it could be looked at on a bench changed the filter, cleaned out and drained drain the sedimenter pot, refitted it did not change the pump as I am convince it is not the fuel pump but the FBH pump which if you feel it when ignition is on II or car is running you can feel it pulsing and making a ticking noise.

I think this emits more as the pump rests on top of the other filters I will be checking again very soon as I purchased another snow box and fuel pump, cleaned them all up, I am now waiting on another filter so it can be swapped over right away, I will be doing a write up once I have finished doing the change over.

I found it better to jack the up put it on axle stands remove the wheel and wheel arch liner an you have full access to box and pump etc.

The fuel filter can be a bit hard to remove from it's housing I tapped mine out with a chisel also keep your eye out for the earth clip and locking spring which is the reason why the filter is hard to remove in the first place Arctic2
