as of yesterday when i unlock with the fob and get in the car and turn the key - nothing happens. no immobiliser message, all lights come on as per position two but starter doesn't engage. then step out, lock and unlock again with the fob and this time starts instantly. happened 3 times so far.

could it simply be a case of needing fresh batteries in the fob? i'm never that lucky! i also remember reading that the fob actually also sends a short RF signal just as you turn the key to crank the starter and without it the engine will not be allowed to start. how can i check that?

Never heard of "a short RF signal as u turn the key"
There are many people with u/s fobs that only use the key blade to lock/unlock and start their P38.

You have the passive immobilser disabled within the becm.
You need to unlock the drivers door lock with the key to allow a start.

Although the fobs lock & unlock the car it's the key in the lock that tells the vehicle that someone is inside the vehicle.

If it worked normaly from the fob & only just started requiring the key in the lock then i'd suspect the micro switch in the door lock is starting to fail.
