Sorry if this is a repeat from another thread of mine, but I'm sure some peeps are bored of it and won't have seen recent activities!
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/autobox-not-changing-113139-5.html

I'm in a situation now where I have no reverse gear after removing automatic control unit and replacing oil filter and kickdown cable.
It was working for a short period of time but now doesn't engage at all.
Added brand new ATF (2 lots of 6L to account for torque converter) which now smells burnt and is dark in colour.

Can anyone advise where to go from here??
Anyone else had issues with reverse gear with automatic ZF box?
Thanks

Replacement box or could it be recon'd.
Are gearbox's hard to fit, would I need any specialist tools? Thanks

Id get it diagnosed 100% 1st... i paid £1000 for a recon fitted, was offered a s/h box for £550 fitted but there was 12month unlimited with the recon.

Thanks can't pickup 3g to watch on me phone but will check it out at work on Monday.
Have seen some 2nd boxes for about £100

I put a second hand box in mine about a month ago, I found it easier than repairing. Re-con is just to expensive for a old Disco so I'd go for the replace it option. I managed to get a warranty with mine so may-be shop around to get one low mileage. Regards Steve

Thanks Steve, I may be picking your brains if it does end up needing a replacement box.
Would I need to lift the engine or does the box drop out?
I've been doing all the restoration work so far on me own on gravel, do you reckon I'd manage the box this way (considering it's weight) or would it be a 2 man job with some kind of hydrallic lift?? Thanks

I did mine from the underside, I'd not long changed the coolant and had the air-con recharged (me just been tight with money lol). I got it about 12inches in the air, the front on axle stands and the back chocked on ramps. You need a engine hoist to lower and lift the gearbox safely. Its a one man job to undo it all as I did it on my own. To put it back on took two of us, and I tried to put the torque converter on the engine first and struggled to get it line up, then spoke to a mechanic mate who said it's easier to put it on the gearbox first. There maybe someone else with a few tips for you. Regards Steve

before I get fully geared up to take this on myself (maybe the end of the motor the way I've carried out some of the previous work!) is there anything I can do to diagnose that the gearbox is definitely broke?

Okay, the ATF is definitely darker but could this be normal as it's an old box that's covered a lot of miles?
