Hi all new to this forum and have just bought a 1992 land rover defender 200tdi, It has been sat in a garage for 5 years doing nothing. so got round to giving the engine a bloody good service and tried starting it today. Turn the key and absolutely nothing. so i removed the starter motor and bench tested that, all is fine there was firing and spinning lovely so i put that back on and tested the power to it from the battery and there is power there. so rigged up a push button start to the connection that the wire from the ignition goes to on the starter, The moment you put power to it direct form the battery it turns over. So the problem seems to be the little red and white wire from the ignition. Its just not putting any power down to it when you flick the key. Any ideas what this could be would very greatly appreciated as i am stuck for ideas.
Thanks

Check the fusible links in the wiring loom that tuns along the o/s inner wing (peel back all the insulation and check for corrosion).
Mine was sat for 8 years and had all sorts of stupid electrickery issues. I removed all the cheapo in-line fuse wire and replaced it all with a fuse box with links from a.. Triumph Acclaim :D
Fixed all the problems instantly.

Sounds like a lot of fun! My electrical knowledge isnt great tbh. So i think this is going to be fun ti fix!:(

Just re-read and realised you have a 'fender.. don't think they ever had the fusible links, but I may be wrong. I'd trace the wire like James says above, can't be anything too taxing.
Assume all the earths are present and correct :)

Yeah have checked all the earths and all of those seem fine. Will have to rack my brains and have another crack next week.
