No power below 1800 rpm

HELP!! My05 Freelander Sport TD4 has a serious lack of power below 1800rpm at which point the turbo spools up and you shoot off down the road like your pants are on fire. Unless you rev the nuts off it before pulling off, it bogs down and crawls upto 1800 rpm before in will even start to pull. Not very good when pulling out of busy junctions or when trying to pull off up hill with the caravan on the back.

Now i'm no expert on diesel cars but i thought they were supposed to deliver power from vertually nothing, hence using them in lorrys etc. Mine wouldn't pull me out of bed!!!

Is this something that is normal and I should learn to live with it or is it a problem that someone can help me fix. Any suggestions welcome as I now absolutely detest driving it!

To try to resolve it I have so far had a new lift pump, cos it broke, and also a new injector.

Please help me!!!!!!

Take it for a drive with the MAF sensor disconnected. This will prove if it is at fault.

Thanks for the reply Chaser. I have just been reading about disconnecting the MAF in another thread. I'm going to give it a go tomorrow and will post my results. I really hope it is the MAF!

Quick update. I have disconnected the MAF and it seems a lot more lively low down. It even pulls up the hill out of our estate in 3rd gear! I off on a run that I do very often to compare the difference.

Next questions are 1)which replacement do I get, 2) how much and 3) where from????

I had the same problem with my TD4 where you think that you are going to stall on junctions and cause an accident. I also disconnected my MAF and it worked a lot better. So as an interim measure I bought some MAF cleaner from EBAY for £5 and it did help an awful lot but like you I am going to get a new MAF because I suspect that mine is on the way out.

After reading on this forum a lot of people favour a Rover Ron Synergy box and MAF compensator which enables you to use a BOSCH or PIERBURGH(which is cheaper) MAF. Have a look at the following link. I would have thought that the Synergy 2 box would be a better option that is what i will be going for next.

i managed to pick up a secondhand roverron mafam off ebay for £15 & use it to boost my original Bosch sensor. Sounds like yours might be well goosed though, so Pierburg & either Mafam or Synergy 2 with built-in Mafam is your best option. Forget the cheap Bosch sensors you sometimes see on ebay, they're usually fake/used duds or faulty new stock.

I have in a way so much as to say that I haven't reconnected my MAF yet. The car is brilliant to drive at the moment! I'm going to get a synergy 2 I think as I like the fact you can switch the power from normal to economical etc. Thanks for the info by the way guys!
