I see reg plates all over the front of defenders. Bumper left and right of winch, bonnet, light bar, under screen on the vent, etc. Is it definitely legal to put it in the middle of the light bar just above the windscreen?
 
one of the landy mags was asked this question recently and the answer was that the number plates must be fitted to the "front" of the vehicle and the mag sugested it meant the furthest front rather than just forward facing but there was no difinitive answer.
 
have mine on the front vent on bulkhead,mot was done 2 weeks ago and it was advised that it was too far from the front of the vehicle but not a failure

Mine failed the MOT on it being in the front window so screwed in on the front bumper, so now its nicley covered by winch hook.

So, no definitive legal or not legal positions for plates then?
I`ll try the light bar and if that provokes a reaction can move it to the bumper.
 
My no plate is on the front bonnet, stick on .. ;)

Last MOT the guy told me it's possible that legislation coming in might mean he would have to fail it next year due to letter size and that the plate doesn't have a particular ec mark, absolutely nothing wrong with where it is, it just has to be 'at the front' ...
 
apparently to START using the stick on ones is illegal as it can allow people to make up their own ones (and there is something about the sizing of the letters coming in too) but those older type vehicles that already have it can keep it (and as far as I know it is now illegal for companies to sell this type...but that hasn't stopped me being able to get hold of one!;) )

And yep I failed an MOT for having the plate inside the cab behind the windscreen so ive taken to the habit of gaffa taping it to the grill when test time comes around!! :D (until the sticky arrives that is!!!!) Ive never had any problems with the police so far with having it kept inside the screen but I was told that the law says the plate must be clearly visible and on the first vertical (flat) surface from the ground up!

Just shows what a load of ****e the Mags print then isn't it. There is a very clear and concise description of the placement and positioning of a numberplate. Typefaces and sizes are legally defined and all new numberplates must have suppliers name and postcode on it. no other sign logos or type is allowed except a EU country designation I:E GB, Cymru, Kernow etc.
