I'll try and find the startup sequence i ihink it was in a post by 8in avee on a forum. But i don't imagine any sensor will be to blame if it starts up perfectly on easy start. Gradually take all the sensors out and see if anything's obviously wrong.ie crank sensors can be affected if the plate is cracked or the signal can be fuzzy if metal gets stuck on the end. Gems is prone because the trigger arrangement is very flimsy bent metal( Thor is cast and machined into the flywheel) .

Are you saying after the easystart it just fires and runs ok? Or it tries to start? Are these gems engines? Pretty frustrating by the sound of it. Gems engines are usually really quick starters.
I would start by trying all the sensors used for start up. Crank cam temp fuel temp gems has a set sequence of sensors it relies on to start. The wires can easily be checked by unplugging the ecu and continuity checking the wires end to end.using a paper clip in the plugs! Rave has the wiring diagrams.
Fires and starts, thanks for the heads up. The cars been standing for years so I guess it could be something as simple as a corroded contact. That was the problem with the starter motor which I cured yesterday.Away for a while tomorrow so I will try again when I return.

That would be a great help.;)

Oxygen sensors will have no impact on starting the engine, neither will the Maf signal. The engine ecu will not look at outputs from the Maf until it gets away from the starter motor and the oxy sensors need around 10 secs of running to get up to temp and start switching. The basics are needed to start the engine,so, most importantly you need a decent signal from the crank sensor. This will give the ecu enough info to time sparks and pulse the injectors. You don't need a cam sensor signal to start it.coolant temp sensor will make a big difference. Is this reading a plausible value ? Can you use a timing light to see if there are sparks present when cranking ?
Knew I'd seen it somewhere.

hi, if i have good spark does this mean crank sensor is ok,thanks for any any help please.

Don't know, to be honest. Looking in RAVE it says (for crank position sensor):

As there is no default strategy, failure of the CKP
sensor will result in the engine failing to start. The fault
is indicated by illumination of the malfunction indicator
light (MIL) on North American specification vehicles.
the others.

That seems to match your symptoms although it makes no mention of spark plugs. Guess it does it by stopping fuel? I'm surprised there is no fault code though. Other possibility if cam sensor, I guess. RAVE says:

If the camshaft sensor fails, default operation is to
continue normal ignition timing. The fuel injectors will
be actuated sequentially, timing the injection with
respect to top dead centre. Injection will either be
correct or one revolution out of synchronisation. The
fault is not easily detected by the driver. The fault is
indicated by illumination of the malfunction indicator
light (MIL) on North American specification vehicles.

Again, I'd expect a fault code though.

@Saint.V8 is pretty clued up on the v8. He might have some ideas?

I would suggest ensuring that the BeCM and the engine ECU are in sync - you say you have tried to do it but are not sure you have done it correctly - before going further, you must be 100% sure they are in sync and the codes are correct - else you will spend forever and a day going round and round in circles.

Prerequisites:
  • Strong Battery
  • Good engine Earth
  • Fuel Pressure
  • Engine ECU and BeCM in sync
  • Air
  • Spark

And go from there - if you are not 100% sure on any of the above, you will be wasting your time looking elsewhere until you have the basic ingredients together.

Just an update from me, feeling a bit better today so I checked the crank sensor connector, fiddled about with it and the bugger started!. Tried a few times and it started fine then began to run rich, knackered now so glared at it, locked up and called it a day:mad:

FWIW wife's petrol 307 refused to start a while back & that was no fuel at plugs caused by dead crank position sensor. ecu not seeing a signal so as far as it was concerned the engine wasn't turning so no need to provide fuel. Everything else present.
Same issue a couple of years later & the sensor was covered in crap. After cleaning it worked fine - so similar to the comment above by johnnyb70.
Appreciate it's not a LR but cleaning it & its connector could be a good start.

still no start, going to send becm to rick the pick, Call Rover,to be checked out, thanks
hi, peoples, recieved becm back from rick, who serviced it, installed it ,still no start, have check light, engine will crank all day whith out starting, have fuel pressure, done security relearn, with nanocom, says security mobilised yes, still no fuel to plugs, please help, perhaps i am thick and missing something ? thanks for all your help.
