Hi all, bloody typical, best time of the year and this happens, driving home tonight and I noticed the car just dying momentarily a couple of times anyway gets to the end of the street and it cut out with no ignition lights whatsoever, turned the lights off for a second and she restarted and got me onto the drive  I went in had my tea and came back out and ran her for a few minutes and she cut out.
Thats it shes dead no ignition lights whatsoever, nothing but the lights work the horn works and the interior light works.
Ive checked the earths and battery cables, fuses, battery is new, took the ignition cowel off and all seems ok.....I fooking hate electrics
Could it be the starter solenoid or would the ignition lights still come on if it were? Any suggestions appreciated im sure im not the first to encounter this one, cheers :)

You dont say how old it is

Try the glass fuses, roll them round in their holders might be bad connection, I've had this problem:)

Done a bit of googling and sounds like it could possibly be the ignition switch itself which would make sense as it seems like there is no key in the ignition when I try to start the engine, would anyone concur on this

You should have 2 yellow Siemens relays swap them round and give it a run if its the realy then your problem will be fixed but then the problem will probably be you light will not work but check the wiring on the realys first

Thanks sjf, ive just figured the cause, its a loose connection at the ignition switch, I managed to get a finger on the wires and the ignition was coming on and starting as normal so will sort it tomorrow after work, thanks for everyones help

I have a defender 200tdi 1995 and I am having problems with the ignition circuit. I thought it was the starter motor and it turns out the solenoid was burnt out and then I changed the regulator for the alternator and the battery is charging. I can only bring it down to the ignition and the contacts, one is burnt out. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure we're you would get them new but second hand on eBay for a few quid I don't think they are super spec just very good quality and reliable that's why they fit them
