Hi Everyone,

I know this is an extreamly long post but please take a look for me, I really need your help.

I have an issue with my Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8 2008 08 Reg and wondered if anyone has any idea what the problem could be. I'll explain exactly what has happened so everyone has a good idea whats gone on.
I've owned the car just over 3 months and up until now everythings been ok. I got in my car as normal last Thursday morning at 5:30am and the car started with no problems. I work in Coventry which is 35 miles away. Just as I got on the M6 at junction 10, the red Battery warning light came on. It stayed on all the way to work. I parked the car up and went to work. At 9am I started the car (first time no problems with battery light still on) and took it to the nearest garage so I could get the battery checked out. The guy put the volt meter on whilst the engine was running and it read 12.5 volts constant. It stayed at 12.5 volts for around 5 minutes. The guy said that the alternator wasn't charging the battery so it needs a new one, he couldn't change it so I had to take it to a land rover specialist. So I took the car to a specialist and he put a new alternator on. As I went to collect the car the guy was still working on it. He said he had put the new alternator on and when he started the car there was a noise and then realised that the noise was the auxiliary belt starting to shred so then he replaced the aux belt. When he had done this and everything was back together he then started the car (started first time no problem) the battery warning light was not illuminated any longer but after around 2 minutes the car just stopped running as if you turned it off and removed the key but the key was still in the ignition. When trying to start the car again, when the key was inserted into the ignition, all that came on was the long green display with no ignition lights at all. The steering wheel did not move into position. The head lamps and indicators still worked, so , I suggested it could be that the battery was not fully charged due to driving the car around 40 miles with the battery warning light on, so he put the battery on charge for around half hour, the voltage reading on the charger was fluctuating between 12.5 and 13.3 volts whilst on charge. I tried to start the car after half hour and still no ignition lights. I tried it again 5 mins later and all the ignition lights came on as normal and the car started. I ran the car for around 3 minutes then turned it off so the guy could put the diagnostic gear on with just the ignition on. I went to start it again and once again no ignition lights! so he couldn't do a diagnostic test. I then said put a brand new battery on so that's what we did. After the new battery was fitted the car started first time with no errors and no battery light on and check control ok so I thought great all good now. so yesterday at 4pm I drove the car back from Coventry to my home address (35 miles) with no problem. I pulled on the drive and turned the engine off then started it again straight away with no problems. I also went out to the car at 9:30pm and started the car with no problems. This morning (Saturday 10th) I got in the car at 7am and it started with no problems, drove 3 miles to the post office and when I got back in the car I got the same problem with no ignition lights so couldn't start the car. I rang green flag to take a look and the guy had a look and tested the battery. The battery was reading 12.5 volts without the engine running. I explained everything that had happened and I suggested he charge my battery off his van, he reckoned that wouldn't make a difference as the battery was reading 12.5 volts and should be enough to start the car. After around half hour nothing had changed. He checked all the fuses and all seemed ok. I then got in the car and tried it again and all the lights came on and it started no problem. The green flag guy then checked the battery whilst the car was running and it read between 13.3 and 13.5 volts which he said should be ok but I thought it should run at between 14.4 and 14.6 volts so I then drove the car to my local land rover specialist (Phoenix 4 X 4) and left the car running so he could check the voltage. The voltage read 13.4 and he said that was not enough and suggested the new alternator was faulty and I need to get it replaced. I am now back home. I pulled the car on the drive and turned it off. I then turned it back on and once again no ignition lights and would not start.

I do apologise about the length of this post but I really need to pick your brains over this one, does anyone have any idea what the problem could be please

They are right the charge voltage is too low......there is an issue in the charging circuit or alternator.

Take it back to the original garage and get them to check charge voltage and let them sort it out as they obviously haven't solved the original issue.

Range Rover need exceptional amounts of power to run and with even a drop of a volt they will shut down to protect the ECUs delicate circuits....

I hate to point a newbie to another forum, but in the spirit of helpfulness to a fellow Range Rover driver.....try www.fullfatrr.co.uk as they are more up on the later models then we are (we are starting to catch up mind!!) but do keep coming back to update us and join in the 'witty banter' we try to have here!
