Well it sounds like you've made some headway in finding the problem. Congratulations. It's usually easier to get at the wires on the starter from underneath.
 
Think Ive fixed it. Just say got a 13m on the nut that holds the earth leading to the battery and tightened it right down, all lights back on dash, never seen them so bright.
It would not fire off the battery as I had drained trying earlier so borrowed a good battery and it started straight up no wires heating up or burning on the starter. Got my battery on charge and hopefully everything back to normal.

Make sure the cables you thought were lose, are not ... do this before you reconnect your battery as it's easy to spanner yourself into a pickle under the starter ... :oops:
