i decided to try my diff lock out today on my 93 200 tdi for no reason other than to see if it worked and nothing happened  . the stick moved to the right position but with no resistance at all and felt very loose when it was over in diff lock position . no lights come on the dashboard and there was no sounds or feel to it , the low range and neutral side to it work fine but not the diff lock . any ideas ? thanks

The only way to really tell is by getting the wheels spinning - have you got an area of gravel or summat you can try. The wire from teh switch on the tranny box is a bit **** and has a tendency to come off which just means the light doesn't light, but you might find it still works. Failing that and if it actually doesn't work, it's most likely the slightly flimsy linkages which engage lock that are at fault.

i dont think its working cos it made no noise at all ( dont know if it should ) and i didnt feel anything like you do when you put it in low range . its not important but i thought it might be an easy fix

Difflockophobia!

Other than the light coming on, you would be unlikely to tell the difference between it on and off while you're not moving, or only moving a bit - there is no clunk, grind or anything else to tell, so get them wheels spinning and if 2 on different axels spin, it's workin!

Drive round in circles in a car park. If the diff lock is on you'll feel the front wheels grabbing at the road when on full lock. Don't do it for long though you'll wind yer transmission up and bust something.
