number 4 inj on my p38 is wet and leaking so the side of the block is wet with diesel, are they the same on the bmw 525 tds/omega as theres a bimmer scrapped near me and i can have the injectors for free! is this a common thing or is it likely to be a seal that i can just swap out? ta mutchly vince

Pretty sure it is the same as the 525tds.
I've heard different stories as to whether injector 4 can be reconditioned or not, but certainly not just a seal you can swap out.
I'd take the one from the BMW!

all pipes are good the body is damp up to the pipe union tho.... diesel all over the block on the oil filter side. wonder is it the copper sealing washer in the head..... anyone know what that wire/sensor actualy does and could it be bypassed with another std injector??

It'll run like **** with a standard injector there - iinjector 4 tells the ECU about the timing of fuel delivery I think.
its expensive to buy - £160 new I think - but if you can get that 2nd hand one, the job isn't so hard. shouldn't take more than a couple of hours first time.

Number 4 injector measures start of injection and in conjunction with crank speed sensor singals ECU to advance retard injection according to engine RPM. There are two different number 4 injectors pre EGR and post EGR. You must fit the correct one.

thats me stuffed then..... both the bimmers scrapped here are pre egr:doh:

Sounds like similar thing to mine except mine was No6 Injector, noticed & had a faint smell of diesel over couple of weeks & looked unernieth to see occasional drops.. so started mine up & shone torch at each injector to see slight bubbles coming from base of my injector. took took to garage & cost £91. = £12 for parts/saundries & £64 to "remove & re-seat injector, & replace leak off pipe & blank". took my local about 3 hours. now all clear.

That was the spill pipe leaking somebody got screwed.

Why is that?

I thought they were the same except for the plug?

BTW I came across an engine with the 'no.4 injector' fitted in the no.5 cylinder. Has anyone ever heard of this or did someone just mess up?

Different injectors STC 2290 94-98 £124.99. STC4218 98-02 £150.00. Can't think the extra £26.00 is for a modified plug. The reason the plug was changed is so you cannot interchange them i would think. Somebody messed up. Should be in number four last cylinder to fire.

Thanks Wammers, thats what myself and Sean thought too. Didn't cop that the no.4 was last to fire. The P38 had a replacement engine fitted to it. We weren't sure if say an omega or BMW used a different cylinder for reference (never heard of it but it was an outside chance since the P38 was a runner). Our gut feeling was that it was a cock up, No.4 being last to fire makes sense.

just to update you i swapped out no4 for an inj from a bmw 525tds took all of half an hour! the top part of the body with the wires in it was loose on the main part:mad: what i thought was an oil leak was actualy the diesel washing over the engine and box:mad:. as a side effect it also idles alot better now! thanks for all the replies lads!!
