I'm looking at 2 Freelanders at the moment with the intention of buying.

1. S Spec 04 plate with 49k on the clock full service history
2 S Spec 05 plate with 79k on the clock full service history

Both are the same price. I presume there would be 1 year left on the factory warranty.

I do about 15k miles a year as well

Any ideas which would be more appropriate?

some of the problems with gaylanders seem mileage related, so I'd go for the lower mileage one. get the best / longest warranty that you can.
better still, buy a disco instead.

30,000 less.....and if this has a good history....go for it..or as was said earlier maybe look at a Discovery...
What ever you do Def a GOOD warranty..and not a bull**** one either...One written in blood..
D

Is a warranty that important, the 04-06 freelander is an improvement is it not?
The reason i'm not going for a disco is purely that i don't need one. I need a small 4x4 for fecking around the back lanes of somerset and carrying some stock etc. I thought about a defender but i need to commute 25 miles and back to work every day

The later freelanders are a big improvement over the early ones but still get a warranty, you'll be glad you did.

Late freelanders are not overly troublesome but some things are expensive to fix and it's better to be safe than sorry.

just do a little research on here about some of the general problems with Freelanders of all ages.....and you will see that a GOOD Warranty is a must.
You may be lucky and get a Peach of a car.......OR..you could be in for some serious expenditure....Quick example if the Vcu Ird,Rear Diff etc were to go..and it is still a common thing....prob in the region of 1500.00 to 2000.00 or even more...
All depends how handy you are with a spanner.
I have had mine for 3 years and no major problems..BUT i really wish id gone for a Discovery now.....:(
D:D

Why the facination with the disco? Too many jokes from workmates or every 2nd freelander being driven by a soccer mom?

No its generally a far better vehicle...and is a genuine 4x4 the Freelander is pretty capable off road, but if the going gets really tough its outta its league...i like the discovery as its as capable as a defender but with a lot more comfort and is a bit more refined..its got a low ratio gearbox diff lock etc..
My personal choice every time would be a Defender crew cab pickup, but these are a little too spartan for the family..if it was just me and the dogs thats what id have..
D:D
Btw i do use mine a lot on the rough stuff so i may be a little biased as i find banging the underneath and replacing backbox a bit annoying...:D

Ah gotcha, I don't really need a total off roader myself as i won't be going into fields etc.
I'm not mechanical minded at all so I'll be using an independant landrover mechanic.
I still reckon the freelander is best suited for my needs , commuting (slightly better mpg) , small , able for mucky flooded lanes etc etc

Thanks for the info though it all helps, the place selling the vehicles in question does not give a warranty but I'd image they are an expensive add on

nearly every post in this thread (other than yours) has said DONT buy it if it's NOT got a warrenty - they werent just saying that for a bit of typing practise

Whilst I know the freelander does and had reliability issues the insistance of the knowledgable folk on this forum that a warranty is a must is quite worrying.
Perhaps a disco or a non landrover vehicle is the way to go. Hard to bloody know at this stage

Where are you looking at them..whats the name of the sellers business?
If they are a decent enough place they should not quible about a warranty..if they wont give one it may be a better idea to pay a little bit more from somewhere else and get a warranty with it...you could even look at a Land Rover dealership..i had mine directly from a dealer and the prbs i did have in the first 12 months were sorted without any questions.
And as for an alternative make..........i really dont know the slittys can be a little bit more reliable..BUT when they go wrong lodsa money..what ever you do just make sure you get good back up again with a Warranty and also a comprehensive service history..is also a must.
Better to have a higher mileage with a history than a low mileage with none.
One last thing if the business was local to another member im sure someone would come and give the vehicle a once over for ya..for the price of a Beer....:D :D

Well i was looking at a car supermarket type place , the vehicles are ex-fleet etc. The price is bottom dollar thus no warranty up front but a full service history etc. I reckon a 1 year warranty all in would be about 600 or so

Well if the vehicle is cheap, enough...it would be worth a couple of extra quid for the warranty...if they want 600 offer them 200 and i bet they will go for it to secure the deal. Make sure it covers all the drive train...some of the buy after warranties arent worth ****e..cover everything that wont go wrong.
Its a buyers market at the moment mate.
You gotta be a bit cheeky..if it was me i would have them to put the warranty in plus road tax and at least half a tank of diesel.
Or id be away somewhere else...give it a go the worst they say is no and you havent lost a thing especially if you really do want to buy it.

By law any trader has to give some form of warranty on the product they are selling. Quite often you will find its only for 3 months and not worth the paper its written on, but they have to do it.

There is the option of buying a warranty yourself. These are like an insurance policy and very similar to those offered by a lot of second hand dealers. I think even peeps like the RAC offer them. Just a thought

I've already had a look at AA warranty and some others, its pretty vague but one of things you can include is 4x4 cover , some specifically mention rear dif
