TDV8 Engine. Good or Bad?

So, it's a TDV8 on an 09 plate Vogue with 55K on the clock and full Hunters Land Rover service history...
One owner.

I know its the Jaaaagggg unit and @Henry_b says they are betterer than the BMW's, but what do I need to check?

It's not up for much but I don't want a dawg...

I thought it was the petrol V8 that was a Jag unit not the diesel?

The Petrol V8's from 2005 are the Jaguar units and near indestructible , from 2006 LR used the Ford/PSA derived diesel the 3.6 TDV8, the main issues are the Turbos and EGR's both of which are the expensive issues often discussed.

Other known faults are the Intercooler hoses splitting, which is a simple fix in all honesty, Headgaskets again a known fault however not at all common usually found on high mileage hard worked and badly maintained units.

As with any L322 i'd budget a fair wedge on top of the purchase price to address any faults should they arise, the EGR and Turbos for example are expensive to put right due in most part to the sheer amount of labour involved.

I'm an advocate of petrol in almost all cases BUT the economy of the 3.6 TDV8 is superior at around 25-30 compared to 12-18 from the petrol ;)

If it were my money i'd be looking at the 4.4 TDV8 which is 2010 onwards, for the extra money you get more power the better 8spd gearbox and FAR superior fuel economy 30mpg+ in most cases the 4.4 TDV8 is the best Diesel fitted to the RR IMO a good compromise of reliability and economy, by RR standards of course.
 
Reading things about 3.6 puts me off, think I’ll stick with my td6, reliable old lump even if it’s weak gearbox, £1900 sorts that issue out. Wouldn’t mind 4.4tdv8 but out of budget.
 
So I test drove the RR this morning and it’s no sports car!
Remember I currently drive a Merc… it turns corners when you turn the steering wheel and you can get the power down in the middle of a corner without feeling like you’re on the cusp of a fairly spectacular accident.

Comfort-wise it’s lovely. I can get in and out of it without any problems or much effort. The seats are like a favourite armchair and the driving position is magnificent… looking down on people or over hedges (especially in a corner to see what you’re going to be going through sideways)

Equipment levels are better than the Merc and that’s 2 years younger, but I guess it’s a game of Russian Roulette with what electrical equipment is going to fail first. The instrument dials looked like they’d been shoved in from the leftovers box from building a Transit van.

I didn’t test the down hill thingy or the selective knobby thing as both would probably never have been used and would instantly fail or send me careering into a hedge sideways.

The engine seemed fine, with lots of power but it did seem to take time for the power to have any noticeable impact on the speed unless you absolutely nailed it in which case sudden and painful death would likely be just around the next corner (assuming you managed to get round it) I did notice there was a symbol to the left of the gearshift that said M/S - I can only assume that is Manual and Sport - I didn’t press it as I didn’t want to soil the seats or myself.

Overall, I could see myself driving one and I’m sure after the initial shock of seeing a hedge / / ditch / tree etc. rapidly becoming the obvious landing zone following a slow meandering corner, my driving style would alter to suit but I would miss the buzz of the Merc’s cornering ability and would probably have to find a ridiculous Sports car as well…. Hanging yer balls out as you manage a perfect corner is different to having yer balls in yer mouth wondering if you’ll make it in one piece and if not, what electrical equipment will break next?

Your description of the handling is about right but in my experience tyres play a big role in how they handle my L322 handled like shít until I fitted a set of proper road biased continentals so it might be worth driving more than one to get a sense of how they can vary from car to car but to be fair it's a heavy old motor 2.7ton coupled with a high centre of gravity cornering at speed can be a fun affair but it's the blend of comfort and handling prowess which makes the L322 probably the best in class.

As for performance the TDV8 has in stock tune 262hp and 640nm so yes coupled with her girth it's not going to tear the road up, the main benefit of the Diesel over the petrol L322 is the low down torque 640nm is available from 1500rpm which makes towing "if you ever do it" a relaxing affair.

But that being said the 4.2 S/C has 420hp and with a proper tune up and supercharger pully 450hp+ is possible and is a hoot to drive so it might be worth seeking one out if you want more performance.

As for reliability, it's well known they break BUT with that being said any car in the RR class is high maintenance.

Thats what this forum is for we'll all laugh "AHEM" I mean help with any issues that one of these magnificent beasts will invariably throw at you.. :) ;)

Oh and as for the dials if you want nicer ones opt for a late 2009 to 2012..

I have to say the thing that’s very appealing about this one is the 55000 miles on it…
Plus the full LR service history and genuine one lady owner!
