Newbie's questions about 200tdi based defenders

I'm looking to purchase my first defender. At the moment I'm looking at what appears to be a rather well looked after '91 200tdi. Whilst I don't think 150,000 miles is bad for a car of that age, is there anything I need to look out for in a 200tdi engine of that distance? It's been recently serviced with the cam belt changed.

if the 200tdi has had regular servicing then it is good for at least another 100k miles (200/300tdi engines are the best that land rover have ever produced)
 
the 300tdi in my disco has now covered 158k and has never had anything done to, just service items, it will still pull my car trailer/blast up the m/way/greenlane all day and put up with the doris driving it and still return over 32mpg
 
Firstly make sure its a TDI and not a TD Ive seen a few early ones before advertised as TDI only for people to discover they have a TD, that aside the only real killer with a Landy is the state of the chassis, yes they can be welded but if you can find one with a very good chassis it will retain its value and everything else is bolt on and easy to replace...

Yeah, wot he sed.

Chassis (& bulkhead) are almost everything. Don't be afraid before commiting to buy to get right unnerneeth & give it a bluddy good poke all over with a V big screwdriver.
 
I'll third that having bought a 1991 200TDi meself a few months back. Chassis had been repaired quite well with new outriggers, waxoyled etc. Swivels, bearings, track rod ends, shockers and steering damper were all new as well. Slight attention required to bulkhead, new rear safari door ultimately required and passenger as well come to think of it. Apart from that it just needs TLC and tidying up a bit.

Another good tip, is to acquire a 300TDi back axle (or Disco) as it will convert you to disk brakes all round ;)
