Hi un welcome

Sounds like a good service would'nt go a miss:)

Lack of power sounds like fuel starvation, mucky filters, air leak or knackered lift pump!

have checked air filter seems new surely if i had split pipe or fuel starvation from blocked filter it would be there when topping 70mph up hill in fifth when warm not just at low revs when cold only happens intermitently when warm never seems to get above 1/4 on the temp gauge and then only if i boot it for 10 miles

Never take a Diesel for granted, might be nothing to do with being cold but having been left over night, air leak, fuel run back to the tank:Start up,air in system that clears it self the more you drive!

Might be ****e in the tank that blocks, un blocks etc......There is also a diaphragm in the injection pump that when knackerd can cause similar problems.

As for your temp gauge could just be a faulty sender unit.

Add to the check list poss small split in turbo pipe to inlet manifold or hole in intercooler, once you get a few revs on it the turbo may overcome the losses, just a thought.

It's worth doing a service on it anyway if you just bought it and there are two fuel filters - one in the engine bay that you replace every 12k and another underneath at the back that needs cleaning every 12k. Also by doing this you will eliminate things as the cause of your problem.

I've got a 200Tdi on an L and my temp guage rarely goes past the 1/4 too. I think this is normal.
