hi,great site, just bought a 1.8 petrol 1998 r reg and have a couple of questions, from starting car ticks over nicley then developes high revs between 2000 and 3000,have been told it could be the throttle postion sensor,is that right? and where is it located on the engine. Also worried about the head gasket coolant looks a bit oily but no overheating, heater working fine and no gunk in the oil cap,am i being paraniod?.Have one radiator fan is that right for a car that has no aircon?Last of all is that right the abs light stays on until you pull away?Sorry for sounding so dumb about freelanders, help much appreciated, many thanks eddie t.n.t

the throttle position sensor is to the left of the air filter housing behind the distributor, attached to the throttle body.
or
Inbetween where the big hose thing connects to the large thing with injection written on it. You will see two torx screws and an electrical plug.

You should be paranoid you've just bought a petrol freelander.
Diesels are a much safer bet.

Where Howardo has explained, sounds like the Throttle PS needs reset. I've mentioned this before but for the sake of the newbie

Switch ignition to position II, so dash lights are on.

Don't start it, instead press gas pedal to the floor 5 times in succession.

Switch key to position O again, job done!

If it still sits at high revs when warm the throttle body valve is sticking, TB itself can warp with heat.

As for ABS you'll need to search the FL section

If you have just bought it and don't know its history then assume things haven't been sorted. Change the coolant and flush the system and keep a check for the white gunk on the oil cap. If its a keeper then it would be wise to change the timing belt if you don't know when it was last done.
