Hi all

I'm new around here, I went on an off road day last weekend for my birthday at nyoffroad.co.uk - my wife bought me some instruction in there defender.

So, ever since i've been desperate to snag myself a landy and start doing some Green Laning and PnP days. :D

Now, the wife has given me a strict budget, which after insurance (£200) and a decent set of boots (£300) leaves me with really only around £500 to get an off road toy with MOT and a little bit of tax. Could probably push this to £700 if I don't tell her!!

So, can it be done, I know i'm in disco territory as the others are out of budget, but are there servicable Disco's out there for that money or am I in dreamland?

Cheers

If she don't **** on demand and gives you ****=bomb her out.
Life is too short and there is always one round corner

:D

She did buy me the off road day in the first place. Just trying to have my cake and eat it. Get me some off roading without cutting off my chance of getting laid!

Most blokes get laid a lot more before having a wife or after seeing the light and ditching em......

Get a series and forget getting laid, unless your axle stands are tall enough to get two under neath, you won't have time otherwise

Oh hang on, that could be any landy, its contagious you know

was is it like the site over there ? is it worth goin as i am only just startin to go off roadin ???

cheers
Anthony

It's got me hooked, big time! My fingers are twitching on ebay constantly. The site is quite good IMHO, bearing in mind that was my first ever off-roading, so I guess it has the "new" shine to it. There are a lot of different gradients to go at, so different water runs and some nice light bumpy bits to get you tipping about.

They have a see-saw which is being repaired at the moment, and I enjoyed the "concrete V" they have as it's test your lean-angle driving.
For the pay 'n players it was £25 for the day, and for the tuition (in your own vehicle) is £30 p/hr. I got two hours coaching in their Defender 90 for £100.

The guy was very knowledgable and has done a lot of work for LR and Jeep with corporate customers. He also will keep pulling you out all day long and only charges for recoveries when you've been stupid and got stuck in the same place twice!!

All in all i'd say give it a go, for £25 it's great value.

Back on topic...

I bought one for £375 with no MoT and so far (excluding insurance and road tax) its cost me £417.12. Its needed welding on the sills, boot floor, new discs & pads at the rear, propshaft doughnut, number plates, a couple of brake pipes, a couple of gaskets, in addition I've done a full service including changing all fluids. So that might give you an idea of the costs.

The prices did spike upwards and any 4x4 with MoT was making £750-1000 no matter how bad it was. Maybe it was only temporary and they're coming down again, but I don't see it occurring.....

Yea deff just dont rush into anything. i found a f reg 90 with mot till october good chasis but a petrol so i changed the engine for a 200 tdi all in all without insurance about £1000. best thing i ever did dont go down the disco route. good luck

i bought a disco for £650 wiv 12 monthes mot a second hand set of 33x12x50.15s for a £100 home made 2inch lift kit the best an cheapest toy i ever bought jst mek sure u dont buy a rotten egg

my mate bought a 200tdi disco with mot and tax for £175.i just sold him some muds for £60 on wellers.

don't forget recovery points and basic gear. £50 for basics. jate rings and a tow rope.

so i'd say yes. he has blast and doesn't mind dents etc as it was cheap.

£175 seems suspiciously low price with MoT and tax! Any more details or pics? Why so low???

i paid £200 for my 200tdi disco with no tax or mot but only needed a track rod end for the mot, i paid alot more for my 300tdi i got now but i had more fun in the 200tdi as i paid so little for it and it was a toy wheras my 300 is worth more so i dont want to brake it

it looks like a heap and had half a farm in the back of it. only had 6mth mot also. needed some welding to get it through the next one though. he also got it off a local guy who just wanted rid of it and had never heard of ebay

well i payed £700 for my standard 200tdi, rust free 12 month mot. not had any problems apart from off road issues/damage.

don't do what i did and buy standard it will cost you more adding later, my disco stands me at about £2760 now
