Hello to all,
Im dan, and have always wanted a freelander.
I have been offered a really clean 54 plate swb petrol for 2800 with 72000 miles.
I have just come back from viewing the car and was impressed with it no end, even though I ideally wanted a diesel, but my annual mileage is very low, a diesels egr valve would concern me.
The car itself is great and everything works as it should, and no evidence it has ever been off road.
Having looked over the net, there seems to be a heck of a lot of bad reports on these with the k series engine and the vcu unit, at the time of viewing both seemed fine, although the coolant level was low, but no gunk or bubbling from the header tank.
The only real bug bear is the car history is unavailable, save for a few old mots.
The car is really clean and straight, low mileage and seem to drive fine apart from rattly glass panels in the roof, but I can live with that!
Im appealing to you guys, the experts for a bit of advice, one to go for or a lemon?
Any advice id be really greatfull!

the egr valve on the td4 is probably somewhere around last on your list of concerns and things to look at

Not sure why you would be concerned about the EGR valve as they can easially be bypassed. I would be more concerned about buying the 1.8 petrol version, search the forum and you will see loads of good advice.

Perhaps the reason that it's not been off road is that it's missing one of its propshafts. Have a look to see if you have two of them underneath. If if it doesn't, it has a knackered VCU and it should set on fire. If it has two, burn it anyways.

72000 miles could mean that the VCR is due for a change ( mine was changed at 105,000 miles), as previously advised make sure the rear drive line is fitted as some scum bag sellers remove the props due to either the VCU, rear diff or IRD being shot. I think your thoughts on the diesel EGR valve being a problem are probably more relavent to a vehicle with a DPF filter which the Freelander doesn't have.

A mate of mine bought an s reg 1.8 with 48000 miles for £1200. And I've just picked up w reg l series diesel for £1300 with full service history and receipts. Just to give you an idea of price. £2800 with out history seems pricey to me. Especially for the petrol.
