Hi all

Newbie to the forum - hoping somebody can offer me some advice.

The BW transfer box in my 93 200tdi classic manual has temporarily stopped working due to a seized viscous coupling.

The car has 130,000 on the clock and I'm fairly sure the transfer box has never been overhauled etc.

My question is - should I stick with the BW by installing a new viscous coupling, OR do away with the BW (bit worried about issues like chain etc) by installing an LT230. I'm don't care about it being a bit more agcricultural - reliability is my main aim.

Finally is there a good online guide anywhere to help me do this, can I do it with the gearbox still in the vehicle, and would this ebay item do the job.......?

land rover discovery 300 tdi lt230 transferbox | eBay

Thanks all !

Will :)

borg warner is more reliable than lt230 onloy has two weaknesses v/c seize but takes for most over 10 or more years rear output shaft middle splines wear ,often only shown up by loss of drive to back axle which if seized v/c has broken some thing in front axle can lead to total drive loss ,seized v/c wont effect drive till wind up breaks something, both v/c and rear shaft are replaceable with transfer box in situ, tell us your exact symptoms

I never broke my borg warner even with serious off road abuse and the fact it wasnt ever maintained in the 20 years before I got the car. in fact I expect it was the orginal landrover oil in there from the last new owner service!

I would change the v/c if its siezed and change the oil in the borg warner and leave it there!

Hiya - main symptom is tyres scrabbling on tight turns and wheel locked solid with transfer box in neutral.

I thought LT230 was meant to be extremely reliable?

Part of my reason for thinking of changing is prices of BW bits - Ashcroft want £330 to send me a new v/c, or £650 for an entire new BW transfer box. If I buy just the v/c and then shortly afterwards the chain goes..... Argh!!!

So I thought LT230 at £175 on Ebay might be a good solution.

Cheers

it would only be good if the unit on ebay has been overhauled and comes with some form of warranty....

If it just a 'box someone has taken off a scrap vehicle and decided to flog it on the 'bay to get a few sheckles....it could be a false economy.

Ebay is not what it used to be, so buy/bid with caution and if you have the chance to go see it before you commit to buy...I urge you to do so.

Exercise caution or ensure you have a recourse of action should it not be as it should.

borg warner is better than lt230 ,chains rarely and unlikely to go ,viscous can be costly was that price of recon one ,you would need front prop ,t.box chassis mount,hi/low lever assembly plus diff lock linkage to fit lt230 ,p38 rr t/box shares the same viscous unit rtc6044

OK - thanks for the advice.

Is it worth me trying to source a second hand v/c from a P38 - or is it a false economy?

As far as I know that price from Ashcrofts is for a brand new v/c

I am sure we ad the price at £215 for a v/c on here a year or so ago. that was for a new one.

keep looking.

padwanks will be cheap if they do them and they are not ****part.

I use lrdirect, they are excellent but you will need the part number
