hi there - just joined up and need some help. I own a discovery TD5 1996 and stupidly ran out (I think) of diesel. The car won't start and know its because of an air lock in fuel system.
I don't know how to fix it as I am:-
1) female 2) don't know a thing about cars 3) not particularly bright :(

The same thing happened a couple of years back and someone came out to fix it and it only took him a couple of minutes! I know I can phone the garage but I am mortified as I have called them out a couple of times before for stupid things and now too embarressed to call again.
Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction - like a dummys guide (pictures would help).

td5 or 300tdi (td5 not made till 1999) if its a tdi then if you dont no what you are doing then you realy need to get some one to show you how to start it but they are pritty good at self bleading but if that dont work then turn the ignition on then look down the o/s of the engine folowing the fuel pipes down you will fing the lift pump at the bottom of the lift pump there will be a little leaver keep lifting the little leaver to remove the air give it 20-30 pumps and try and start if you dont thing the leaver is doing anything then just turn the engine ove 1/2 a turn (as the engine can stop in the wrong point for it to work)
td5 just turn the ignition on and press the acelorator 5 times the engine light should start flashing leave it a 2-3 min then start

tried your five accelerator pumps and the engine light came on but car wouldn't start. Can hear the fuel pump (think thats where the noise is coming from) - rear of car ...is that right? noisy for about 1 min then stops. Any ideas?

Got the mechanics out today - they could not get it started and said it was more then just an air lock. Today the pump is not cutting off ! they don't know what is wrong with the car and do not have the diagnostic equipment to find out - anyone have any ideas?

1. Do not allow anyone to lookat/work on your car unless they have the correct diagnostic equipment, they are wasting their time and your money.

2. I'm assuming you now have fuel in the car? You need to have a minimum of 10ltrs preferably more before trying to start the car.

3. Working on the basis that you have sufficient fuel, try the following:

a. Turn the ignition on (DO NOT START THE ENGINE), leave for thirty secs, then turn off and leave for 15 secs. Then do it again, and again and again and again.

So a total of 5 cycles of this - then turn the ignition on put the accelerator pedal to the floor and try to start the engine. Once it fires, keep the revs at 1500 until the engine runs smoothly, then fill up the tank with diesel and go for a run around to test the vehicle.

Hope that helps

thanks all, but now have a flat battery! so can't have a go at your suggestions, have called out the RAC to see if they can help. Plus the fuel pump has changed noise - much quieter now and switches off after 20 seconds.
