Hi,
New to the world of Defenders, and have a question or two for you experienced folk about my 2003 TD5
1) Vehicle pulls well enough, but top end speed seems low. Feels like its struggling at 65-70. On the way home tonight the fuel light came on. It seemed to transform it and it was much revier. Is there a seperate pump for a reserve tank or anything? wonder if it is lacking fuel at higher revs, and thats whats limiting it a bit.

Or am I just clutching at straws here?

2) Oil leak (ok, i know they all leak according to my friends) It appears to be coming from the front top of the engine on the left side, out of an electrical plug, then running down a braided/crimped pipe towards altenator, then below that it goes everywhere and is on the front of the diff.

Although I have these teething problems, still love it and after wanting one for so long i want to get this one sorted and enjoy it.

Thanks all.

The oil leak, from memory is a common problem and effects the harness for the injectors, so both your problems could be related, but this is just from memory so I could be wrong.

No , sorry, disregard that, its the loom in the rocker cover, you don't want to be going in there.

Fuel light is most likely the sensor in the bottom of the fuel filter/sedimenter telling you that its full of snot/water and would like to be drained, best of all fit a new one.

The leaking loom is a common td5 problem, easy to do remove rocker cover and replace loom and the rocker gasket, also flush out the engine ecu red plug with brake cleaner.
If you leave it the oil can cause misfires.

Overall it sounds to me like the old girl needs a good service.

Thanks for the replies. Have booked it in to be plugged in at my local 4x4 specialist on tuesday, he said they would check fuel pressure and also do a visual check aswell. They said it could be oil in loom but doesnt exactly sound right, I also asked about fuel pump but he said they have found them to be very reliable on defenders.

I had a poke about today, but my knowledge is very limited. I put mole grips on the actuator arm, that moves (with quite a lot of pressure) 2-3cm ish. Took the pipe to the turbo off, from what i could see it was very clean, no lateral movement and spun freely. whipped the MAF out too, the gridded side next to air box was grubby/oily, looking at the fine wires, they looked ok, but they are so fine its hard to tell. I didnt try cleaning it as i didnt know what was best, and didnt have anything like that. I might see if local car spares have anything suitable and give it a squirt over the weekend.

I will post up the findings...good or bad (please be good!)

Well worth checking the resistance readings on the MAP sensor, you will have to find the reading on google etc as I cant remember that far back.

Cleaned my MAF and MAP today, they were a bit grubby.
See if it helps. Have also ordered an EGR blanking kit as it seems that's what everyone is doing. [GALLERY=][/GALLERY]
