Hi all
I have just got my first Landy a 1996 discovery 300tdi.
I have a few problems I hope you can help me out with.

When I stop of pull away there is a metal clunk from underneath the engine, It only does it when i pull away or stop, The only thing i can compare it too is when I had a a lower engine mount lose its rubber bush on my previous car so the mount was metal on metal.
I have given everything a shake but cant seem to track down the problem, Any ideas.

My indicators will not self cancel, is this a common fault?

Firstly sounds as if you have alot of play in yout transmission shafts.

Secondly, my disco indicators don't cancel either, your cancel prong has prob broken off the back of your steering wheel, or the indicator self cancel springs are f**ked. Quite common actually.

Kin idikatters they all do the same.

Get underneath with a big iron bar and try a few joints,bushes e.t.c.

OK....... I have noticed that i am able to hear the clunk rattle clinking noise when driving over speed bumps and potholes etc as well as when i come to a stop and pull away, i am 80% sure its at the front end so I have been under the disco this morning having a poke around trying to find it, The front prop rotates about half inch with a metal clunk but i understand this is ok if it does not move in any other way, The one thing i did notice is if i rock the car back and forward with the hand brake on there was a metal clunk from the brake area, Could this be to do with the pads as i have heard in other posts? could the pads rattle while going over bumps and give off a loud clunk/Clink when starting and stopping? or does the brake area make a noise when the car is rocked anyway

Any further advice or areas to check would be much appreciated

Hi Revi, it sounds to me like you have two things going on at the same time, but, before I go into that in any detail I would just offer one word of advice. If you are used to normal saloon cars then these 4x4's will have all sorts of little noises, clatters and bangs that you don't normally get in an ordinary car, as there is so much more mechanical stuff in them.

Ok, so back to the noises. As I said, I think that you have at least two separate things going on at the same time.

I reckon that the clunk on moving off and over bumps is one thing, probably caused by the 'A' frame balljoint and the other tinkling noise could be either the brakes pads and their springs, or, if you have lockable wheelnuts they have a lightweight cover on them that sometimes rattles. I notice this on mine only ever at very slow speeds on country lanes.

Unless you fine something to the contrary either by inspection or driving I wouldn't be too concerned abouteither of these noises, although the A-frame did get on my nerves, so I changed it.

Hi all, I have found the problem, The brake pads are not secure, I can move them 5 mm back and fourth and a few mill up, when i play around with them they make the clunking sound against the calliper that is obviously much louder when at speed.
the movement seems to be due to the size of the wholes but they are the same as the ones i saw in halfords?

So gents

How do i go about fixing this, the pins and springs looked old but I cant see how renewing them would stop the 5mm movement, the pads look new and the correct ones
Is it the pins etc that are worn or the calliper. do disos not have shims on the pads as i dont?

Check the arms that run from the chassis to under the axle, the bolts work loose and the holes in the axle mounts get elongated. This will give you a nice clonk from the front. Thats assuming your sure it is the pads causing the clonk.
