New to this. Freelander engines

Hi, new to the 4x4 market, bought a 2001 1.8 K engine freelander. Seems to be using coolant. Expansion bottle empty, regular. No white smoke or oil in water, any ideas? Also is it possible to swap the engine for one of the later BMW engines? If so any ideas on what other bits need changing. Thanks for any advice

Or you could convert it to a tickford 2.0 turbo
