Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for a little bit of help. I have a 1981 Series III Land Rover. I've always fancied one and decided to take the plunge earlier this year. Unfortunately I was a complete mug and I think I'm pretty safe to say I got ripped off. The chassis is Pretty sound and bodywork is. The engine went boom after one week though. I think it had to prima engine in But whatever is it isn't one of the usual ones. I decided that now i have to replace it that I would replace it with a V8. The donor engine is an SD1V8 diesel. It comes straight out of a Series III complete with the conversion ring. I bought earlier in the year and I've only just got round to putting it in. I've hit a snag though as the spigot shaft from the gearbox doesn't seem to reach the clutch within the engine when they are married together. I was just wondering if anyone has tried to do something similar or has any advice for me?
Thanks guys and gals
Andy

Firstly, V8 diesel??

Just google a series v8 conversion and see what comes up, im not expert but i assume if you stick a conversion ring in there youre gonna have to magic the bell housing shorter or input shaft longer, unless the v8 has a very deep clutch assembly.

what about trying to get a 109 v8 bell housing or something.

tbh this is a useless post becuase i have no idea what im talking about and am nearly at 5k posts so might aswell pad it out a bit.

will your input shaft even mate to a v8 clutch splines?

and find out how long a series box is expected to last with a v8, ive heard not long.

its a trade off between keeping the original transmission that fits and is original, or a newer box that will be a bugger to get in there...

Yeah a V8 diesel for the extra grunt and torque but understand its an abomination lol

I also didn't want to change all the fuel kit as currently running on diesel.

I have sorted the clutch issue so it fits the current shaft but as I say one or other needs changing.

I really appreciate your reply and will check out the link now.

Thanks again!

Sd1 V8 diesel?
That's a new one on me. I know they experimented with getting the RV8 to run on diesel - project iceberg but I thought it failed?

*edit* yes it did fail - they wrapped it up in '83 apparently?

Both probably. I have been a complete mug from start to finish. I will persevere however and get the blooming thing back on the road.

I'd rather just get rid of the whole thing but it cost me a fortune for 1 weeks worth of motoring

so have you bought a v8 petrol and been seen off thinking is Diesel or have you got a real v8 Diesel- most likely a gmc 6.2.

Engine pic please

It was sold to me as a V8 diesel???

I'm a bit baffled as to how you can fit a different engine, but you can't tell the difference between a petrol or diesel engine. Is this a windup?

If you are genuine, prepare to get the **** taken out of you for such a donkey mistake.. then after everyones had a good old laugh.. decide on if you want a diesel or petrol and someone will probably help out ;)

Guys, I'm being a twonk! You're all obviously right.

This isn't a joke though honest!

I haven't done anything as big as this before and I'm learning as I go. I really live Landy's and would love a working one.

It was sold to me as a diesel but didn't even bother to research whether this is right.

Depending on your point of view the guy who sold it to me either knows more or less than me but perhaps we're equally stupid.

I saw the leads and despite knowing diesels have glow plugs I didn't question it.

Please be gentle fellas as what I need more than anything is a little guidance.

I'm trying to do the work to a high standard and have the use of a full working garage with lift.

What I suppose I'm really trying to get to the bottom of is what box goes with whatever engine I have.

Can someone identify the engine categorically please?

Thanks for your patience and help...
