Hi, just got on this site after i bought a 1999 xedi last month.

Just a couple of questions.

The rear prop shaft has been removed and if i floor it in second up hill in the wet, one wheel spins and i lose all drive, if i replace the propshaft will that cure it?

How hard is it to change the electric window mech?

Thanks in advance Luke

It may resolve it only if you know why the prop was removed in the first place....

You could end up fitting a prop and doing more damage

Window mechanisms, fiddly but doable

usually, rear prop is removed to hide a fault with the VCU in the middle of the vehicle.

make sure you check the VCU and IRD before refitting the rear prop or it will eventually destroy IRD.

If it doesn't have traction control fitted, then what you are experiencing is correct. Power from the engine always takes the easiest route through the diff to the road wheels. In this case, the one wheel which is spinning.

If the rear prop was fitted, it would also send power to the rear wheels which would help.

good luck

Do a search for how to test a VCU. It's been covered about a billion times on here...

Hippo's method (I think) with the long bar and weight is about as definitive as it gets.

It's in the video below.

Chock front wheels. Lift one rear wheel. Release hand brake. Don't matter if manual or auto gearbox or if in gear. Small screw driver to remove wheel plastic centre boss. 32mm nut. Start the bar turning at the black dot, to allow it to take up the slack in the transmission. Time the bar through the red line which is 45 degrees to the horizontal. This will allow you to gain a comparison. Video bar is 1.2m and 8kg weight. But simular will give a near comparison. It's designed as a diy test.

As said above, vcu is normally removed if "seized" or ird and/or rear diff has probelms. If yer vcu has probelms, or yer suspect problems, then remove the prop again before driving. If not transmission wind up will occurr wiv a "seized" or tight vcu fitted. Some thing will give if it does.
