Hi,
Am based in Dorking, Surrey and have just bought a 2003 petrol Freelander with 73k on the clock. The previous owner had converted it to 2 wheel drive, which I had changed back to 4 x 4 last weekend. It has since developed a loud knocking noise when on full lock going slow, and worse when reversing.
Can anyone let me know what is the most likely cause. The car came with the original driveshaft which had been reconditioned.

Thanks

Jeremy

yes
you have been had :(.
remove the propshaft immediately. Do not drive it as it is.
If you bought it from a dealer, read the "crock of ****" thread, take it back and demand your money back

Its a common trick to hide a blown transmission system which is likely to be very expensive to fix - most likely need a new IRD as a minimum :(.

you should have asked before yu bought it

& check the rear diff mounts.

This ere knocking sound... have you run over an angry dwarf with a hammer? If so, park it in a river/ford 12 inches deep and drown the little feker.

What did they do to reconnect yer 4x4? Replace ird or take oft rear blanking plate and fit a pinion gear + props + vcu or just fit a vcu + props?

When does it do the knocking? On tick over when stationary, only when driving, or all the time?

Is the noise proportional to vehicle speed or engine speed?

Have you tired to get someone to hear the noise from outside when you Drive past?

Does it do the noise continuously or at irregular intervals?

Can you perform the one wheel up test to test yer vcu?
