Hi, I have recently fitted a new steering box to my 1991 90 Defender.

From what I was told the new steering box was off a TD5 but it fitted exactly the same and works fine. Apart from the damn resovoir keeps leaking ATF when I top it up.

At the moment the ATF isn't showing on the resovoir dip stick and it's still managed to leak out of the breather hole a small amount, not as much as when I top it up full. The breather hole is part of the resovoir cap.

Any ideas why it keeps doing this, will it be ok to leave not topped up fully, although you can still see ATF in the resovoir it's just not upto the full mark?

Thanks

Hi guys, sorry to hijack your thread, but I have a 200 tdi, looks like its same as busters, and I have a leak from the bottom of the power steering box.

I have been looking for info on how I can fix it, is there a seal or something that needs replacing?

I cant find anything though, can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks

You can either take your steering box out and get it reconditioned or replace it with one that doesnt leak. Trying to repair the seals your self is likely to leak again afterwards. Get it done proffessionally i would. Mine was leaking where the steering wheel link enters the actual box. You need to find out where it's leaking, jet wash it off and keep a close eye on it. It took me a good day to replace.

Land rover defender steering box 4 bolt on eBay (end time 20-Aug-10 07:39:51 BST)

Here's one I found on ebay. They also sell the seal repair kits but I reckon it would be hassle to replace the seals.
