new spare wheel fitted, will it cause transmission windup?

After unavoidably driving into a stupid pothole my passenger side front tyre burst and i had to pull over and put my spare tyre on.

My tyres have been on for about six months now, Grabber AT2's and they're used everyday so are getting worn.

My spare hasn't been used at all though and has got all it's tread in full glory.

Will the few mm of tread cause all the horrible transmission windup problems that people say can come from running different circumference tyres / wheels?

Tyres are exactly same, and the wear is just a few mm, not drastic.

I'll have to get a new tyre now, i'll probably end up running both new ones up front and putting the old drivers side tyre on my spare.

Should be fine as they are exactly the same tyres and its only a few mm. Individual tyres can wear differently due to tracking issues and road cambers anyway.
Good idea to put both new tyres upfront though just to be sure.

Careful howardo, new tyres always, always, repeat always to the rear! ;)

Why?
Its mainly a front wheel drive vehicle on the tarmac.

That's true because the IRD ratio causes the rears to be fractionally underdriven giving the front drive bias feel.
The difference is accommodated by the VCU slipping. Fitting the new larger tyres to the front increases the front bias even more making the VCU slip more/work harder, increasing the strain and risk of seizure.
Fitting the new tyres to the rear has the opposite effect, reducing the difference in front to rear ratio and therefore reducing the amount of work/strain on the VCU and IRD.

that make sense?

Whatever the car you should always put the best tyres on the back. Those of us who have been around sometime will remember cross ply tyres and the law said that if you mixed cross ply and radials, the radials must be on the back.
If the front wheels start to slide, it will usually be cured by lifting off (that is whatever you are pressing, gas or brakes) where as if the back starts to slide it takes far more skill to catch.

If you are driving at a speed that such that you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear, how can you unavoidably hit a pot hole?

Cheers for the advice guys, and chaser thanks for the PM. Haven't got time to swap my spare to the back at this time of night but will go work on the bike in the morning and get it done tomorrow.

Some idiot pulling out of a junction on my right stuck the front of his car right over my side of the road so i had to swerve into a pothole which i would have otherwise missed. I do the route everyday and i always avoid it. The roads are really **** round here. The council thinks resurfacing roads means just spreading new stone over a minimal amount of tarmac and then in two weeks it's all ripped up again.

Good advice this is what i read in Mechilin website too

Take a picture of the pot hole, explain that it caused a tyre to be damaged and send it with a copy of the bill for the new tyre to the council. Ask nicely for a contribution.

It's right you need to put the new spare and the new new tyre on the back [*] It's a good idea to rotate the tyres around the car anyway (it's done in the annual service) and so six months is quite a good time to do it. Front n/s to rear s/s, front o/s to rear n/s, rears straight to front.

Cheers

uhh?

BACK!!!!!

Not front. No. BACK! Yes! Back, back, back.

Have edited the original post to make it read correctly.

i.e. with a "back" not "front".

Back.

OK?

BACK!

Ive tried this with Wiltshire council in the past. The response I got was that as I was the first person to hit it and it wasn't marked with yellow paint I cannot claim anything.

They said that you can only claim if it is a pothole marked for repair and they havn't done it

However ive heard from others in different councils say that once potholes are marked you cannot claim, so best to check with your local council on their policy on this!

if you ever get any where with the council let us all know and we will all come round for a new set of tyres , I did that some years ago and after twisting my wrist on the steering wheel . they flatly "sorry for the pun" refused and said it was not their fault I should try the water board as they had been digging there, I did not go and further with it,

take a picture, then spray yellow around hole, take another picture, send letter first and wait for reply, then send in whichever picture suits, lol

lol good thinking, but they must surely have a record of the ones that have been marked and where they are.

How else to organise a round to send guys out to fill them
