hello all, about the embark into landy world & looking forward to it (i hope) looking at a purchasing a 110 defender, 125k miles, 95 plate, full service history, 2 owners. looking to view (&purchase) the vechile this week, any helpful hints on problem areas. Many thanks

sorry, disel , private
It would be better if you can take someone with some knowledge of land rovers, there is stillthings like chassis and bulkheads to check. The full s.h. sound good as does 2 owners, but being private, i think the old "let the buyer beware" thing still applies.
It prob. will smoke on start up, and sound a bit clattery, but these should clear once its warmed up, have a good test drive, at the very least 5 miles, watch the temp., gauge and be wary if he says it dont work, if he says he cant really give you a test drive because its nearly out of diesel, offer to put £10 in, its cheaper than buying a bag of nails. After test drive switch off engine and try and restart straight away, and look for any drips of oil/water, also check where he parks it for "stains" on the floor.
Do try and have a look underneath for excessive oil under engine and gearbox, chassis rust, exhaust, and ball swivels should be nice and shiny with no pitting.
I could go on but you will have to judge for yourself, if hes got a beard with 6 kids, he is prob. genuine, if hes got a shaved head, wears camo' and only had it 3 months, ????????:D :D :D :D :D :D :D ;)
Good luck and keep us informed.

Hi pigpen
thanks for the tips, unfortunately it arrived after I had the test drive.
However, I gave the vechile a good all over visual inspection a few dings and rust patches in various places (nothing excessive ) all about the 1" or so square, not penetrating the bodywork. Checked the underside of the doors too, the front pair ok, two at the rear showed patches of rust below interior door trim, rear door no rust at bottom.
Inside the vechile needs TLC / good clean with small areas of trim dislodged, all seats covered (covers removed) vinyl front, cloth rear, back cloth all without marks, again all in keeping I would say with 11 years of use.
Underneath the 110, again not a 'bright new penny' looked tidy enough, had not been power washed for my visit. Oil showing on the centre of the rear axle (no patches on floor or drips) just a covering. chassis did show one sign of grounding, however no further deteriation detected.

Test drive, went out for 20-30mins misc A roads & dual carriageway up and down hills. First time I had driven one (bloody loved it!) bit slow to getting going, when going all fine, steering felt reasonably tight, engine sounded good ( I have diesel jeep Cherokee) brakes ok, one did squeak horribly this is going to be rectified before sale.
I am having an AA inspection (owner happy with this) before purchase. showed me all his mots 6 years, mileage had been noted, viewed all bills couple of large services £1000 plus, timing belt replaced 20k ago had receipt. Owner has spent money on vechile over 6 years, let me look at paperwork / receipts for as long as i wanted , let me view the vechile & take some pics, again as long as i wanted.#

Owner had No beard, but shaved head , 4 children instead of 6, drank bitter & loved hill walking (good in my book)
Hope i did'nt bore you to much, is it worth 7k of my very hard earned.

All your thoughts very much appreicated
Thanks

My philosophy is simple...............something is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it.
Good luck, hope you enjoy it, im sure you will, dont forget, you will more than likely spend another £500/£1000 buying the multitude of "goodies" available.;)
