new owner requires some advice please.

hello folks, i recently bought a '99 freelander with 81k on clock. soon after having the motor the headgasket went caput, anyway it was done at the garages cost with the following : head crack test & skim, new bolts, water pump, thermostat, oil&filter, re:antifreeze, cam belt and centre & rear silencer boxes. total bill over £500. glad i didn't have to pay! but i've heard the head is a weakness to the motor and am wondering if it's a lemon i've got or now its been done have i got peace of mind for years to come? also there is a slight whine from the gearbox on the overrun, where is the gearoil top up plug situated{ is it ok to put some wynns gear oil addative in?} thanks in anticipation,

did yu have the latest head gasket fitted? Did they fit the new rail at the same time?
