Hi all,

I've recently bought a P38 as a weekend toy. Went for a 4.0 SE in the end and it's a 1998 on 81,000 miles with a good service history. The car is in excellent shape body and interior wise and mechanically no problems (yet!).

I looked at quite a few p38s before finding this one and nearly gave up. I swear that 90% of the cars for sale out there are knackered.

As usual, it does have a few electrical 'issues' that I'm going to sort myself which leads me to a couple of questions:

1) The external temp sensor stays at zero for about five minutes of driving from cold. Then it will slowly start to creep up to the correct temperature. Occasionally it reads the correct temperature from the get go. It's quite annoying as you have to wait for it to go over 3 degrees for the AC to kick in. To fix this I reckon it's probably the sensor so I'm going to order one. My car was built in August 98 so I presume the sensor is under the scuttle panel and not in the front bumper?

2) I need to replace the air distribution blend motor/servo. Question is, are all the blend motors the same or do I need to order a specific one?

Cheers!

blend motors are the same you can buy individuals new from island 4x4

Servo motors you might as well do them all at the same time because of the amount of work required to do these. Lots of hassle and dismantling. I think theres about 6 of them rave manual will tell you.

Replace the oat (temp) sensor as a starting point.

Only 3 Blend Motors - Distribution, L/H Temp & R/H Temp.

There are two other totally different flap motors on the Fan Motors themselves for Recirc Air, but these are integral to the fan motors and totally different to the Blend Motors for the temp and distribution control.

Land Rover did admit to a programming error in some HEVAC chips that caused this fault. If you find that a new sensor doesn't cure it you might have to replace your HEVAC unit.

Yes, I found a service note/release when googling earlier that details the software problem with some chips. It certainly sounds very similar to the issue I'm having. The car is getting a service in a couple of weeks so I'll get them to read the fault code before I start replacing components!

edited to add - just looked up the technical bulletin in RAVE and it's exactly the same fault I have. I'll still get the codes read first though.
