I changed the oils in these during the summer.

Whilst greasing the prop shafts recently I noticed leaks on one diff and the transfer box!!!

I was really suprised and dissapointed.

I now realise the transfer box should have some hylomar sealant on the drain plug before refitting. Do you guys use sealent or not?

I topped up and retightened the drain plugs for now, so will check to see if they are still leaking this weekend.

I'm so glad I greased the prop shafts or I could have well been shafted!!!!

There shouldn't be any need for sealant on drain plugs, provided they're tightened correctly and a new washer fitted if appropriate.

In case of emergency or a damaged thread or something like that, then a couple of layers of PTFE tape on the thread.

According to Rave there is a need for sealant, on the transfer box anyway.

There are no washers on these type of drain plugs.

I believe they are tapered.

the tapered plugs are fine with ptfe.

i lost the one for the radiator, i applied my knowledge and used an 1/2 in plug, the type fitted to unused gas points in the house and some houshold radiators. perfect fit and with the ptfe sealed and water tight. also easier to remove than the placcy crap that is fitted as standard!

Don't think i'd let a land rover dealer near mine...........it allways seems to be that the main dealers have a very interresting approach to customers, assuming (certainly in the case of the ones i used) that older land rover owners are poor and an irritation and that we would only like the posh people through the front door please.
Interestingly most of the good idependents have ex landrover mechanics who all seem to be fab...i love the "Branding" and the "lifestyle choice" thang, makes me smile.
