My freelander is more reliable than a disco and it doesn't rot away before your eyes.
Jap cars are too complicated, they may rarely go wrong but when they do its expensive.

Having had both a Freelander and an X-Trail, I would not touch another freelander if you paid me.

Jap cars have the benefit of selectable 2/4wd and can be repaired by a competant mechanic at home.

Yes but you had a petrol, no arguements they can be ****e. But if you had owned a diesel you may have a different opinion now.
One thing though I've never had screws droppping in my engine:D

Not a valid auguement, Howardo - neither have I - but then I havent had a VCu sieze, a chassis crack etc etc etc on an X-Trail. All I can say is having driven both - the X-T is a better vehicle - still not a proper 4x4 but fine for its proposed usage.

I've never had any trouble from my freelander (touching wood).
Freelanders are obviously a marmite vehicle.

We could argue all day. If you definately want a td4 freelander and are willing to spend 6k.
Why not buy a cheap one with a knackered drive-train. The thousands you'll save on the initial purchase could be spent at Ashcroft transmissions putting a new drive-train on it. It will result in a td4 with a brandnew unmolested drive-train for under 6k.

Morning All,

I was a member on here some time ago when I had a Freelander 1.8 Petrol Serengetti which although ran faultlessly had to be traded in for something a bit more economical for work purposes :(.

Now that my employment situation has changed again I miss the old girl and want to venture back into the 4x4 world.

Whilst my initial requirement is for something that will be used as my day to day vehicle I want to try a bit of mild offroading and with a budget of about £6000 I'm thinking of investing in a facelift 03> Freelander TD4.

One question I have is that I may need to use it from time to time for long distance motorway journeys and was wondering a) what sort of mpg I should expect and most importantly b) will she sit "happily" at a reasonable 75-80mph cruising speed @ what rpm?

I know I should really be talking mud on here butmy old petrol model really didn't like it much above 65-70mph which sometimes became frustrating.

Any advice of what else to look out for would be much appreciated...

Thanks in advance.

PS. What are the main differences between the standard and sport models?

Blimey..you've all been busy this morning!!

Right, from what i can see, you want a comfortable, economical, multi-purpose 4x4 that can keep up with most traffic on the motorways of the uk and europe.

You had the 1.8 petrol freelander which is generally considered the worst of the range but you were happy..fair enough.

As much as i hate to admit it, a defenders not for you..although i'm happy with them, your preference for speed, comfort and economy rules them out...

Another Freelander..hmm..how much greenlaning/off road will you do? If its next to nothing, then get one...but get a diesel...

To be honest..if you want to have the versibility..id go for a good discovery..diesel of course as you seem to do a fair annual mileage..and its more comfortable than the defender..plus you can have more fun off the tarmac than a freelander.

There you go...and i didnt mention slittys or the gaylander word...dammit

my old man had a 55 plate td4 with 15,000 miles on it from a main stealer a few years ago, his initial happiness was soon turned to " oh my god what have i done " it was problem after problem and we are not talkin silly little niggling problems we are talkin major gear box probs! he got rid and is now over the moon wiv his diesel fiesta!
