Im Terry , i just bought my first landrover and i love it ! First "classic" also ...

i expect it to be a steep learning curve ! Like getting hands dirty though which i suspect will be a help ! suspect i might need a fair bit of guidance from your gurus though.

bought a landrover 90 last week out of necessity due to the snow - we have not had the car within 3 miles of the house in a month ! - shopping , coal and christmas was a no go !

its an 87 landrover 90 with the 19J turbo diesel - 106k geniune miles with all paper work to trace it back and all numbers match 3 owners since new

chassis seems solid with one small welding repair needing done to the rear cross member where the rear exhaust hanger snapped off

the bulk head is solid internally but the externals where the door hinges mount and under the windscreen need replacing - not as easy as it sounds i believe but ill give anything a go once.

hi lo and diff lock all work , the gear box seems solid and positive

engine sounds good , oil leak from the air filter area but i believe thats the crank case breather venting into the air filter - will get that rerouted into the chassis - seems to be the standard course of action to keep tin worm at bay.

have a month off so thinking about cleaning up the underside and hammeriting external surfaces and wax oiling internals - is that a good idea or will it just make me cry when it alll crumbles away ?

best learn to mig i suspect - can arc but dont have the equipment and never arced in small spaces !

very additive to drive !

Hello and :welcome2:

I had a 19j 90 on a F plate. Engine died when my Dad neglected to keep a check on the coolant. Head gasket went a melted 2 pistons.

We should've dropped a 300TDi in then, but at the time we didn't have anywhere to work so let it go. I really miss it and want one again.

Have fun with it!

so ive lived with it a while and what began as just a vehicle for winter due to living in the sticks seems to be turning more into a project for me - im a tinkerer at heart - was a cycle mechanic for 10 years and am now an oilfield engineer dont get to play with my tools as much as i used to !

- ignore the stupid motif - but what way to go about repairing the bottom of the door - the frame seems to be solid but the skin is a bit crusty and the paints come off !

hole in the floor ! - tomorrows project !

passengers side bulkhead

passengers side rear x-member where the exhaust mounts to - needs a spot of welding

any advice for these jobs appreciated - these are all pretty much priority. For the bulk head im going for a new passengers foot well (as the chassis mount onto the bulkhead is broken) , door frames (lower brackets look ok) and the top corners

other things on my list are

locate reason for the dashlights continually blowing

clean up and paint bumpers F+R

Clean up and paint wheels - rust

full service and cam belt

tidy up brakes , change pads

summer time - tidy up body work , remove cracking paint , remove the EST logo , clean up the panels and repaint

do tub cappings - repair/replace

for all its faults it continually puts smiles on my face - its slow , its noisy ,its going to be a money pit im sure, its utilitarian and i love it !
