Hi all, just introduced myself on the... er, introduction page. My first Disco is here, a 97R 300Tdi ES auto, 120K with 8 years history, after years of Volvo estates, and I see a steep learning curve ahead.

Sorted the 'CD Error' with tips from this site, thanks boys! 'Lady' driver holds hands up - I've done odd bulbs and relays on the Bricks but otherwise limited my intervention to oil and water top-ups. Thinking 'tis time to get a big spanner and start learning fast. Could this beast be any more different from a Swedish turbobrick (155bhp and a turning circle to equal my daughter's Fiesta)? Ideas welcome for a rudimentary tool kit - engine-out jobs may not be on my agenda, but changing filters should be!

Hi there.

A half decent 1/2 inch drive socket set would be a good start. Draper are good value. A halogen inspection lamp is useful for poking around and I have found a little head torch ( B & Q Energiser for 9 quid) to be invaluable for supplementing the inspection lamp when actually fixing things.

A box of disposable gloves and a pair of cheap overalls off ebay will save your clothes.

A Haynes manual is also a good help.

Cheers

Andy

As stated above really :D

Although i would add that the Halfords professional toolkits are very good value and come with a lifetime guarantee (BONUS) :D ...... spending a little extra and going for the bigger set gets you spanners, all the sockets you'll ever need and screwdrivers etc into the bargain ...... they also do then on 1/2 price deals regularly throughout the year so keep your eyes peeled ;) ....... they also come in a nice black case that keeps it all together and is easily kept in the boot of the car taking up little space

Being as you are a member of the more dainty sex a 2 foot long 1/2" drive breaker bar and suitable socket for your wheelnut size would make life much easier for you if you should encounter a puncture with no help available to you ;)

A grease gun can also be a valuable investment when dealing with Landies too as can a decent set of mole grips/locking pliers ;)

EDITED TO ADD.................
Dont forget to get a LARGE tin of WD40 LOL :p

Grease gun is a must, keep prop shafts well greased. Good point about the Disco is that it's easy to work on underneath as lots of ground clearance (changing oils, greasing etc). Get a decent pair of heavy axle stands too.
