While on vacation the fuel pump on my petrol Freelander started to stop working, so I ordered a replacement one (dutch site). Replaced it (with half a tank of gas) and everything worked.

While driving the fuel gage started going up o_O. So fueled the tank up and the indicator gave an empty tank.

I have 3 car seats in the back and live in a city (no driveway). So checking if somehow I put the connector on backward is not an easy task. Also, I think it only went on 1 way plus the fuel pump is pumping gas and not sucking gas.

Does somebody know what could be wrong?

Hi, welcome.

Yes, this is a simple one.

Land Rover changed the design of the fuel tank sender and gauge about 2003.
You have the wrong sender which comes complete with the tank pump. It is not anything you have done wrong !

I believe it can be rewired but probably simpler to find the correct in tank unit for your vehicle.

Hi

There is 2 pump references :
WFX000190 from vin 1A to 2A ( you ordered this one )
WFX000210 from vin 2A209163

andyfreelandy, that explains it. Too bad the old pump went with the trash. Rewire stuff on the pump itself would be too much. But if I know the correct pins (from the 4) that come out of the pump I could rewire the connecting cable.

Thank you @Alteredtech, indeed WFX000190 and WFX000210. Was reading online that both would work (and they do but the indicator).

Price for the WFX000210 was also more dan double at the time. 130,- vs 330,- .

Keep a jerrycan in the boot, not easy to read the fuel jauge in the reverse way ;)

Swapping wires external to the pump and sender will not help. The system uses resistance of 100 ohm for Full and 600 ohm for empty. Swapping wires externally only changes the polarity.

Too bad the old pump went with the trash.

The rule is never throw the old items away until you are 100% sure the new item is working as it should. ;)

You will need to move the wire from one end of the resistor to the other.
