Original 10 year old exhaust has just been repaired to pass MOT but I am advised I will need a new exhaust pretty soon. Independent landy garage has made the point that the original has lasted 10 years so why not go for another genuine exhaust. I have had a look online and the situation seems very complex.

Firstly I guess my vehicle will have a catalytic converter fitted into the front pipe. LR020683 To replace this alone will cost about £850 for a genuine replacement. Am I correct in thinking I am not required to replace the catalytic converter?. If so the replacement front pipe would be £120.

The other 2 sections mid - LR066090 and tail - LR066422 are £265 and £185 for genuine parts.

The garage advise many of the cheaper aftermarket exhausts only last a couple of years?

I think I have seen stainless exhausts with lifetime warranty cheaper than the genuine replacement.

Would really appreciate some guidance.

Have a word with your local motor factors or indie, and never go to a main stealer!
My NA downpipe cost £35, middle silencer section £42, and back box bit around £42 (all plus VAT!) around 18 months ago from a motor factors.

That is very true I end up replacing my exhaust ever couple of years because it has rusted through again. But I do the work myself rather than paying a garage so because the sections are so cheap it still works out far cheaper than other options.

This is definitely the way to go as long as you can find a supplier which uses all stainless, some of them just use stainless tube and the connectors and flanges are not stainless, and you are happy to replace the whole system all at once. Personally I cannot stomach the cost of this and am trying to find someone who will sell individual sections so I can replace it piece at a time as the old sections rust away.
 
Thanks for replies. Have phoned a motor factor and had the discussion about the catalytic converter. He advises all vehicles since 2001 have had cats fitted and when the exhausts are replaced the system must still have a cat. He advised the cat in my system is built into the front pipe and works out at about £360 just for the front pipe.

It will be very unlikely you will need to replace the front pipe and cat, due to the heat they rearly fail, its usually just the middle and rear that corrode and need replacing.
I have just replaced my middle box after 14 years with a new genuine landrover part for £85, I found it on ebay, taken off a new defender and after a few miles use.. look on there and see if you can find a bargain.
Therd were wheels and tyre sets on there too taken from new landy.

My Defender is a 1996 and it has a CAT, although it was very hit and miss as to which vehicles came out of the factory with a CAT fitted back then.
Exhausts tend to rust through from the inside out as well as from the outside in. This is because water is a by-product of the combustion of the fuel and so builds up inside the exhaust system, especially boxes. As Scooby22 says the front pipe and CAT last a long time. This is because the pipe gets very hot there as it is so close to the engine. This means that water vapour, from combustion, is too hot to condense out to water on the inside. And, external water is vaporised before it has much chance to settle and aid rusting. My CAT has absolutely no electrical connections or sensors to it and so no one knows if it is functioning or not and Mr MOT doesn't care, so long as it is there. No idea if a 2008 model tells you if the CAT is dead or not? If not, then you will probably only have to replace the last few sections of the exhaust. Aftermarket bits are cheap, but you will replace them, especially the box section, every couple of years. Unless you do long journeys, in which case the whole pipe gets hot and reduces the amount of condensation in the box, so your pipe will last a bit longer. My front pipe and CAT was still solid after 18 years. Hope this makes sense as I've been drinking, as my avatar picture would suggest ;):)

Long journeys does not make a difference (I do 25k a year), they will still only last a couple of years. But you need to replace the cheap aftermarket ones a lot of times before it will cost the same as a genuine one.
 
I have just spotted this on ebay, I bought one to fit my defended td5 from a new car take off and it was genuine, I think it was from the same place. Look out for the tail section if you require it as well.

Edit: sorry this is for a 90, not sure if the box is the same size though, might be just the length of the tail pipe that differs. But worth looking on ebay as lots of people removed the middle box to fit straight through pipe. I also noticed a front pipe and cat on there but doubt you will need them. It will be worth contacting this seller as he sells a lot of new take off bits to see if he has an exhaust system for your vehicle

Thanks for replies. Vehicle has just passed MOT so no rush, I will keep looking on ebay. The issue with the exhaust in fact is not with the pipes. The joint between the front pipe & middle was blowing which was bodged up for the MOT and the hangers on the exhaust are about rusted through although the hangers on the chassis are still sound.

How can I tell if I do in fact have a cat on my vehicle - just wondering with it being a hard top/van/commercial. Is it visible from under the vehicle or under the bonnet?

I have noticed the front pipe seems to look in pretty good condition but the flange is about knackered. Suppose someone could weld a new flange on??

Your photo is very helpful assuming the cat is the larger diameter section which I guess fits vertically down the side of the engine (will look for it later). I do recognise the front pipe from looking under my vehicle.

Question is - is the cat separate from the front pipe held together by nuts & bolts??

I didn't say they would last a lot longer. I wonder what would happen to the longevity of yours, if you were doing short journeys! :rolleyes:

It's all one long section, it's comes out from underneath,you need to undo all the bolts around the heat shield ,remove the propshaft and the middle chassis crossmember (under the gearbox)
Then bring the tail of the pipe towards the front wheel.

So after all that you need the whole section, or get some flexi pipe and weld it on or clap in a section.
