My dizzy needs replacing, it's there and working by god's will alone.

I'm out in Mexico, so would be looking at sourcing a non-lucas dizzy.

I've currently got a 35DLM8. What are my options re other makes.

Will any V8 distributor fit? Is it just a case of removing the lower gear/pump mechanism and attaching the new dizzy to the top, or am I well off the mark.

I want to get something american as parts will be easier to source here.

Thanks for reading!

Hmmm, Mallorys not getting a lot of love across the internet.

I may have to get a new 35DLM8 shipped out.

Why do need to replace your existing dizzy? As long as the bearings and pick up are O.K. your vac advance works and you have a good rotor arm and cap what else is there?

You can buy a replacement base plate that includes the pick up, the reluctor shouldn't be damaged so you needn't worry about that, a new vac unit if you need one is a tad expensive but available (cheaper than a new dizzy) so all in all if it is working why replace it?

The costs of a reconned dizzy from Simon @ BBC doesn't really make it worth my time getting the separate parts shipped over to rebuild mine.

The inside was rusted to hell, I had the reluctor soaked in WD40 for a while before it came off the shaft with a big hammer, the reluctor is battered. The springs have too much play in them and the advance/retard doesn't work.

Being over here, it's easier for me just to replace the whole dizzy other than trying to fix individual parts.

the simon bbc dizzys are top turd quality though.

try it, but id prefer a decent second hand.

im not trying to slate simon bbc, he's selling working dizzys at a pattern price, but they really are nothing more than your 80 quids worth, and after i ordered some parts for mine, i reckon the tolerances could be worse off on a new chinese model than on a decent second hand oem!

cheers

Simon BBC

all over eBay selling spares

i got some springs from him, straight up chap and sent me extra parts FOC.

Not the guy I'm slating, just parts quality was obviously not as good.

It got my dizzy 90% working so it'll do, but I wouldn't fancy a whole dizzy at that quality.

Cheers

So am I reading this right, you have had some springs from him but not anything else and you are not happy with the quality?

Ok thread revival.

Yeah I ordered some springs.

He was a quality guy and I got a great service, but the springs were not identical and as such do not fit so well. He sent me some new weights FOC so tbh he gets plus points for being a good guy.

The problem is the parts that are available for these dizzys now are from china and are not anywhere near as good quality as oem.

However, as you are perhaps hinting, I have not looked at a complete aftermarket dizzy so I shouldn't really comment on parts quality as a whole - maybe the complete item is sweet, although I have heard otherwise.

Therein lies the problem with cheap pattern parts!! :)

Agreed.

As posted before, there's really nothing in a dizzy that can write it off.

You can buy all the bits for them, there's nothing that's irrepairable.

Also check out distributordoctor.com

Uk based Lucas specialist.

Cheers :)

With the warranty I don't think there can be much wrong with sourcing from the UK and the guys prices are better than anywhere else even the big boys!!
When infact the item is the same, so you are getting a better price a better warranty and all shiny and new too.
Yes it might be made in a not so QC mad country but if they strip them down and rebuild them to spec, I don't see the problem.... they now what they are doing

Getting an old unit a refurbing it with any Lucas specialist will cost probably two of these units so I'd rather keep a spare new unit in the boot or atleast pieces of it for spares.

I think the modules are going to be a little questionable too on an old distributor and they aren't refurb'd so really I see what your saying but I'm not in agreement.

those amps are only £10 for a behmarche unit, you could keep a few of them spare if your worried, shipping wouldnt be much with a dizzy.

Having looked at parts from a new china item and obviously the full internals of my original, you can easily see the quality is not comparable.

With a precision device (ish) like the dizzy I'd be looking at keeping as much oem as possible, I just wouldn't trust a cheapo to keep time - I think the inferior metals would wear quickly and cause trouble.

The main point is that it's not like a starter or alternator where it kinda self destructs inside and is a pig to repair, the dizzy rarely fails mechanically, and anything which does is simply replaced, the rest is fine.

I was looking at a china one for mine when I had advance trouble, but I didn't see the point of replacing a load of quality oem bits in full working order for the sake of tracking down a few (impossible to find) springs, which incidentally ended up costing 1/4 of the price of a new china dizzy.

BUT it's now working fine again, only marginally key down by the poor fit of the springs! :D

My point is that the distributors from say simonbbc compared to Rimmers or some of the other highly priced products are exactly in quality... and simonbbc.com doesn't have stupidly high priced items..

Now the quality is not top turd or whatever that means at all, machining of the body is not exactly Lucas quality that's to be expected of course but it fits nicely and the gear metal quality (which is important) is very tuff

Each one to their own I know but really if you see some of the other stockist for this product you can laugh at the prices for what is the same product before they alter the advance curves.

I'm not on comission by the way!!
and to prove it here's a discount code 10%0110 you can use this on paypal at there website www.simonbbc.com

I searched because I bought the product from him and wanted to see what other people were saying to have my say and leave feedback to show people you can get a top product at a great price when all is not good in the country for money etc
and your right he is a top bloke, gave me plenty of advice and even helped with installation over the phone... I don't think many companies would have the time to do the same and I think we should support small business's before all of our factories move out there

Mine is running sweet and looked great before it went in (to much mud on it now to see if it still looks great though) and I will be the first to come back to let you know if anything at all changes!!

I got my new dizzy from simonbbc and have had no issues with it whatso ever. In fact most of my new parts have been after market parts and as yet not experienced any running issues. i'm of oppinion that the moderen after market parts are of just a good quality as genuine parts but at a greatly reduced price as your not paying for the name. Either that or I'm just lucky lol

I think your lucky cos I had nightmares with the non gen cap leads rotors, even lucas ones.

I think LR go through and pick the best of the lucas production conveyer , then lacas have there pick , then intermotor then ****part lol. well I know its not quite like that but its what it feels like lol

I stand corrected regards simon BBC then, if he's doing good stuff fair enough.

And you can't knock them prices - houngan expect more tbh at a fair price like that.

I guess it's just like the "aftermarket parts" rant thread that's going on right now on disco section, it's each to his own, and some people end up having a nightmare with cheap bits, whereas other see no problems.

Personally I'm a fan of pattern parts, I think you get more value out of them than a slightly longer lasting oem part at twice the price.

Anyway cheers :)
