hello, i'm a new discovery owner in weymouth, dorset.

i did use your search to try and find answers but there are so many to look through!

after years of dreaming to have a jacked up off roader discovery i finally had the chance to go and buy one.. along with its problems i didn't know of until the next day..

its a 1994 discovery es v8i (facelift 1), only got 101k on the clock, ideally i really wanted a manual as i don't like autos but for £750 i thought it was a good price (i think the problems was why it was cheap..)

in the morning i have to drive at 10 miles an hour as the engine squeals and does not want to go, very slugguish until about 5 minutes later it drives fine like theres nothing wrong with it and put my foot down it goes. kinda annoying as it has a loud backbox and i don't think the neighbours would take too kindly letting me idle on my drive for 5 minutes early in the morning or the people behind me slow crawling to work. however i do love the noise.

could that be due to the autobox or engine oil having to warm up? i'm not a mechanic but my 1982 chevrolet camaro z28 (5l v8 auto) never did that in the morning when i owned it.

i'm not getting any air out of the dash vents, it only works on the windscreen demister. could that be a broken cable? the hot weather lately has got me hot and bothered:mad:

the drivers window doesn't work. what to check first? i wouldn't want to get another motor only to find its not that..

and lastly the diff lock lever doesn't move. i've confirmed that its in unlock mode. but it would be nice to have it operating. i have read your guide and as i'm a body man, rather than mechanics, i'm willing to pay a local enthusiast who also know how to sort it to get it operational for me.

i'd like to get a set of +2" springs and change the tyres for off road tyres, perhaps 235/80/16 or go for steels and 31 11.50 15. i'm not a stranger to 4x4's, i've had a mk1 lwb shogun v6 auto and a mk2 lwb shogun 3.5 manual.

All these issue's will have been covered on here so have a quick search ;)

Oh btw :welcome2: to LZ ... you did check for rust didn't you:scratching_chin:??

first off welcome to lz. I had a omega like that very sluggish auto box, changed the oil which made it alittle better, but there was a valve in there that was clogging. Got that sorted and all was well again. Check the autobox oil, should be a nice red colour, if its brown or black it will need changing. Should be able to tell on the dipstick.
With the heaters I think there is alittle motor that moves the vent flap, maybe that's given up. As for the windows start my checking fuses, relays, the switches themselves. Is there power getting to the motor itself.
As for the wheels and tyres i'm running 33x12.5x15 on mine with a +2" lift and flat dog arches. Why not look at 265/75/16 shouldn't need todo to much arch work either

hello, thank you for your replies, i will delve more into the forums regarding these problems.
yes it has a boot floor, i've had it in the air to check it over and all it requires is 2 small areas of welding (the first it'll need) n/s/f bulkhead and n/s/r inner arch where the inner arch meets the lower quarter panel. n/s/f wing is bubbling on the lower part where it meets the sill and the rear door, both lower corners starting to bubble.
i think after a weeks use, the 'bumping' noise in the back is starting to annoy me now. going over bump, something 'bumps.' i think its the rear door moving up and down.

i will check that. i believe its the door.
btw its not a 94 model its a 96 with a private plate and its a 4.2, not a 3.9 as i had originaly thought it was. goes like stink off the lights...
however there is a date stamp under the dash with a tag date saying 97? i'm confused. the log book states it was first registered/used overseas in the special notes then declared manufactured 1996. so exactly what year is it? is there a vin plate decoder on the forums?
