Treating the 2 1/4 petrol to a new carb and dizzy ,delivered today and gonna fit in morn what's the best setting for the timing have you found and is 2 turns and a quarter from full in the best setting for the mix

its roughly that about 2 1/2 2 1/4 you have to play so that it picks up as it should does no smell rich etc just spend a bit of time on it and when its right it will start on a chilly morning with no choke from cold

Static timing by the book works OK - I do mine by ear 'cos the marks on the pulley have rusted away!

I did a little guide for myself
Choose #1 cyl on the dizzy, mark it as such and the other lead teminals with the rest of the firing order (see exhaust manifold) in anti clock direction ( rotor spins anticlock).
Get your hand crank and set the motor at 6 deg btdc (a good start for using unleaded).
Use a torch and look for the mark on the pulley, line this with the first spikeon the marker tab above pulley (6 deg), motor turns clockwise!
You must be on compression stroke on #1 cyl for your 6 deg, to check take out plug and feel it push finger off when cranked. Note where rotor is pointing mentally.
Install dizzy and bolt collar to block, it only goes in in one way, make sure it clicks in.
Line rotor to your labelled #1 cyl terminal; to do this fit diz cap and draw line from centre of lead terminal for #1 down onto dizzy body in perm marker pen. Remove cap, twist diz body to line up rotor to your marked line.
So now you rotor arm is ponting to 6btdc on ign stroke and the dizzy body is going to fire #1 at that point. Be exact, use a ruler, take your time.
Clamp down dizzy half tight for now on pinch bolt.
Install plug leads in order you labelled.
Fire up and see you she sounds, if ok then use a strobe gun to dial in your 6deg more accurately. Loosen dizzy pinch bolt and twist body to get it at 6 deg or thereabouts, use your ears too!
A strobe gun is not to everyones taste but a worthy investment i say and a nice piece of kit.
Before you touch anything go on youtube and watch the MSD ignition distributor install video, smashing vid and very very helpful! Good luck dude

Thanks ronsealdeath ,that answered my question and I have got a timing light,it did end up at 6 btdc and mix screw 2 1/2 turns out ,the pont gap was .017
With the mix screw does it get richer or leaner the more you wind it out
Thanks monster

It lets fuel past the needle so out lets more fuel in ie clockwise leaner anticlock richer.
Warm up fully start at 2 out and richen until revs rise then start to fall, lean out until revs peak then set the idle between 500 and about 700 rpm, its not an easy thing to get right!

Hi,
What carb did you get.
I am considering changing mine and would welcome advice.
I currently have Weber fitted.
Cheers

I got a zenith 36iv copy by britpart. Be aware they arent amazing quality and ive read stories they can be a pain to get running right. I still have a stutter when engine is cold which i suspect is the carb.
A brand new weber would be your best bet for a fit and forget first time! At least you know its a quality part.
