Hello all

I dont know if this will show up anywhere. I've never been in a forum before. I always had them down as being the preserve of people with unsavoury personal habits or extreme political views! The pursuance of other hobbies has led me to buying a 1972 SWB Series 3 petrol landy which was supposed to be purely for practical reasons but since buying it I seem to have developed an irrational desire to be with it! It needs some tlc and unfortunately I have no mechanical knowledge. The last vehicle I came close to being able to service was a bmx! I'm enrolling on a mechanics for imbeciles course and I'm hoping you guys can give me some (constructive!) pointers.

Where abouts in the forum should I begin my search for answers?

Apologies if my first post has left a turd on the information superhighway!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, the first thing you have to learn in mechanics is never to put yer fingers anywhere yer wouldnt put yer willy, that shud keep them safe.

Next learn all the sweery wurds, like cum aff ya fookin bastoord, or take that ya fooker.

And last when jacking a vehicle up, ALWAYS, chock the fookin wheels, and use axle stands, and put something like spare wheel and wood under it as well. Coz it goes up easy peasy like there is no weight in it, and kills yer when it fookin falls on you.

Everything else is like burst knuckles, cut fingers, manky, and a long satisfying process of learning how to repair yer own vehicle insted of givin it to the robin bastoords in the garages.

So buy a manual then when in difficulty yer can ask or search on eer for guidance. We might take the **** from time to time, but it's all fun so join in, and DUNT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.

I welcome lad and listen to the wise wafflings of above....Well put.

First 2 problems - Shall I post these in the Series bit?

1) Running on
2) Starts farting and popping when going downhill with no throttle (a bit like she's trying to bump start herself whilst already running). Doesn't do this when doing the same speed on the flat

Running on is caused by the spark plugs, or carbon, or a sharp edge of metal glowing red after the engine has been told to shut down.

Many cars have suffered from it, the fiesta and escort for example.

It's caused by running too lean a mixture, or if your timing is out a tad, lead free petrol could be your problem in an older vehicle.

Also make sure your exhaust is gas tight, stick a rag over the end and listen to hear if gas is escaping, if it is leaking then this mad popping sound could be caused by that as well. The engine loses back pressure.

However I think the fault is the first item.

Hi Lardy,

Best of luck tracking down and fixing the above problems, any questions you have the nutters on here have got an answer...

Sometimes you do need to take some stick though, AAAhhh the Banter!!!
