Hello to all,
Right Here goes,
My neigbour has a Camoflarge Land Rover which he has given to me as he has just got a new 90 one and he just wants rid of his old one.

What should i look out for before i possiblly end up with somone elses possible rubbish on my drive? Beggars cant be choosers i know but sometimes these situations end up more hassel than they are worth!
I have always wanted a Land Rover especially a Defender type.
I have little knowledge about cars but can change a tyre and do a basic service air, fuel, oil filters and oil changes etc but i wouldnt do a cambelt for example.

am i going to be wasting my time? as do these vechicles require more of a mechanic/owner relationship rather than a novice/owner relationship.

Its a H REG DIESEL POSSIBLY EX Mod 110 and has had power steering fitted to it so his wife could drive it with the dog in the back.
Are these models to steer cleer of and would it be best to scrap it for example or are they worth keeping hold of? Pictures would speak a thousand words i know, will get some put on soon. just wanted to see the experts views, it runs and the bodywork has faded and it may need some welding apparently. Any knowledge or help welcomed!

Regards

Don't look at it as trash or rubbish. Remember the old saying...... One mans trash can be another mans treasure.

You might have a good Landy on your hands and not know it. Take the times to see what it needs, look at whats broken, rusted and worn. Make a list and then we if it's worth it.

Maybe look for a Landy enthusiast in your area to help you look at it, but the bugger might say its trash and run away with it :) I would :) :)

I have put up a thread asking people's opinion on a First time buyers thread which would have suited your purpose well. Don't know if the mods or admins saw it.

Don't trash it before you look at it well.

Had to pay £3000 for my 110 which then was as good as scrap, much work done and now it's awesome, love it, if your inexperienced and not too mechanically minded then the 110 will be a great way to learn, so easy to work on and most parts are cheap too.
Getting it for free you can afford to throw some ££ at it anyway as you'll get it back if you ever sell, keep us posted.

Even rotten Landies needing restoration go for a grand plus on Ebay.

I'd bite his arm off for it if it's free!

All I can say is you lucky sod :p
I, like many others on here, would love one for free.
Scrapping it would be a crime, and if everyone scrapped a landy that needed work because of rust, age etc there would be very few left.

If its not your bag sell it on, make some one very happy

Where abouts are you someone mite be able to have a look at it for you if its not to far from them :)

Every land rover needs work done to it at any given time. But as long as the chassis is solid and the engine running I'd say put it on your drive and enjoy it.

When the time comes that it starts costing money you will love it so much you will be willing to spend it ;-)

Thank you all for your info, am going to get under the chassis and have a poke around this week see what's what from the info from all of you and threads that I have found on here but I must admit I'm falling in love with it already! I couldn't scrap it that would be a crime, great site been a massive help already I think I have got the Landy bug! Will keep you posted!
Thanks

Take the 110 and learn about it as you restore it. I would kill for that opportunity. You have a really great chance to have a fantastic vehicle that can grow as you knowledge grows. Good luck you very lucky man.

Well done on getting it for nothing! I've just bought an ex mod 110 Defender...they are easy to work on...parts are plentiful and cheap to reasonably priced. I've found that there are some differences between mod and civilian parts but nothing major. Some parts are now obsolete so when you do find them they are quite expensive..rareity pushes the price up.

As has been said before...as long as the chassis, bulkheads and mechanicals are all ok then you are onto a winner....bodywork and paint can be sorted fairly easily and cheaply...if you are prepared to but in some elbow grease that is!!

Have fun tinkering with it as I do with mine..and you'll be pleased with every improvement however big or small you make to it!!
