Needed ird pinion

Hi I bought a v6 freelander with water problems I've now sorted with new thermostat housing and adjacent plastic pipe that's first issue sorted now second previous owner has removed proshaft for fuel saving but supplied it with car but after looking to fix it on today I realise that he has removed pinion from back of ird now has anybody got one for sale and will it pass uk mot without prop fitted

Sounds like the IRD has been tampered with because it is broken .... why else would they take out the pinion and remove the propshaft? And if the IRD needs replacing, you should replace the VCU too, because that may have been the reason for the IRD failing.
Not uncommon to hide problems thsi way. There are lots of 2 wheel drive freelanders around for this reason. I don't think there will be a problem with the MOT (others UK based may be beter informed) but you shoud inform your insurance company as it is 'modified' from standard.

If you know where / who it came from a phone call may save you some hunting round and tell you more about the real what / why the pinion was removed ...... maybe a leaking seal ?

I know the feeling and the Hippo gets a good " offroad " workout with all the potholes, and it aint been off the tarmac yet LOL

He told me he removed it to save fuel and to be honest the car is immaculate and everything works it's got full leather interior,heated seats and front screen all working and with a landrover badge ha. I would of thought if the ird is knackered would removing the pinion and prop flange stop the noise and are they that hard to rebuild

Read a little here .. We were looking for a FL for the missus, but eventually went with a Nissan X-Trail ..

good choice - bigger boot and more reliable - petrol or doozil?

Petrol, unfortunately, but at way less than £2k on an 03 plate with less than 60k miles it couldn't be missed.

Actually it's pretty damn good, it gets more mpg than her last car, tows the caravan better and is less likely to worry when we load it up! Just had a 70k service at the local garage, all fluids, brake pads, filters and stuff for less than £200 and it drives like new .. asked them to mini MOT it and it would have passed with no advisories!

Can't really fault it ..

petrol is betterer than the doozils, coz they have been known to munch turbos .
my local stealer used to do a service for £95, including free?? AA cover for a year and a hire care for the day.

Yeah I read that after we bought it. Brother has a 2.2DCI (I think) Columbia 56 plate, lovely car, but he has had a couple of engine issues, though I don't think the turbo's gone on it yet ..

UK mainland mot will allow props/vcu to be removed and still pass.
Some do remove the props/vcu to save fuel, but the vast majority do it to save money on required repairs.
Removing the pinion on the rear of the ird isn't needed. You would only do this if the pinion to internal gear was feked up, causing problems.
Failing bearing inside will cause it to rumble if the pinion is left fitted even with the props/vcu missing.
Also a broken tooth on the gear.

Passed the mot all ok no advisories going to get a recon ird and vc anybody fitted them how hard and is the v6 different to diesels and 1.8 petrol and when did the different ratio come in mines a 2002 yr

All v6 will have the new ratio.
v6 ird is different to all others.
The ratio changed when the v6 and td4 came out for the 2001 model year, which started late 2000.

V6's have a different VCU damper to, I think

v6 is the only one which doesn't have the vcu damper. Smoother engine we think. The others do, but we have found over the years not all.
