Hello, I'm pretty new to this site an owning a Defender.

I'm in a spot of bother. I went to my landy to drive home, turned the key an nothing :( When I turn the key all I can hear is a faint click coming from the starter motor relay an nothing else no noise from the starter motor or solenoid.

Any help, any advice will be AMAZING!

Thank you

Nathan

All my lights an everything work fine. If it was a flat battery would I hear the solenoid an starter trying to kick in?

Yes you would if it's anything like mine! There can be plenty of juice to put the lights on but not enough to turn the engine over if the battery is partly discharged.

Where are you? Someone with boost cables or a tow rope might be able to help.

Great thanks for your help! I keep jump leads in the wagon so I will try an give it a jump start an see what happens.

Check battery terminals and connections at the starter inc actuator wire from ignition and earths. If it stil wont turn over try connecting a jump lead direct from solenoid +ve to battery +ve

put yer headlights on. turn engine over on key.

-if yer lights dim down to feeble candle power, chances are its a flat battery.
-if yer lights go out completely, chances are its a bad connection somewhere.

Are the dash lights dimming out?

At the moment it sounds like either dodgy fly lead to the starter motor (small spade connection) in which case a quick wiggle with your fingers should get it going, or sticky starter solenoid in which case a tap with a hammer should sort it.

Just to make sure I'm hitting te right thing, where is the solenoid motor? Also this fly lead where is it?

Just tried to jump start it an nothing, lights are strong as the sun an dont dim at all. Cheers!

Worth taking an engineers hammer and giving the starter motor itself a sharp whack. They do sometimes stick. (One of the few things you can actually fix by hitting with a hammer.)

Follow the cables from the battery, they go to the solenoid that sits on top of the starter. The small wire from the ignition connects to a spade on the front of the solenoid between it and the engine.....if we're talking a tdi

She's roars agian. Tapped on most things tried an it started! Now will she start again! Does anyone know if this is a big sign in it needs changing or something that just happens every so often?

Thanks
