Evening All!

Need some help and assistance in sorting the niggles out on my 1996 Discovery 1 ES 300tdi:

  • auxilliary drive belt went and replaced but now sounds like there's a bag of mice in the top pulley - squirted with WD40 but the squeal keeps coming back. Any ideas?
  • just replaced the stater motor, reconnected the battery, first drive in the dark and discovered drivers side front light bulb and rear break light bulb blown. Where do I start to sort the electrical problem out as I always seem to be changing bulbs?
  • passenger electric window goes down no problem but pressing the button up the window travels a centimetre at a time and stops - leave a while and press the button again and goes up another centimetre etc etc until it reaches the door frame. Any thoughts?
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

the electric window problem is because there is something stopping it coming up and the motor is tripping on overload, spray the window edges with "black to black" or a similar silicone spray then run it down, spray the runners with it and then try it again, you might need to do it a few times before it sorts it out. failing that, you need to strip the door down to find out why its sticking.

i dont think the new starter has anything to do with the bulbs blowing. buy lucas bulbs and see how long they last

check the tension of the fanbelt

Thanks for the advice! On the 300tdi it has a self tensioner, but what would i look for in the tension of the belt, how much play?

Cheers,

i think you'll find you still have to tension it first and then the self tensioner takes up any slack as the belt stretches

I don't think you can tension it anywhere else, I think the tensioner alone does it.

The squeak mite mean yer the tensioner is on its way out. I had the same trouble, I replaced mine and it stopped squeaking. Then my alternater pulley started squeaking a few months later.. The serpentine belt system has been the root of all the problems I've had with my 300tdi!

Are the bits expensive and a DIY job?

Belt tensioner is between £35- £45 dependin on where you get it from. Its a piece o **** to fit. Be careful not to over tighten the stud which holds the tensioner in place!! Or you run the risk of stripping the internal thread. Like I did! It shud take you no more than 10 minits to get the belt off, change the tensioner and put the belt back on.:D

Just been on e-bay, yes all yours for £5.50 plus p&p. More like an hour for me, think about it, have a fag and coffee, get the right tools, look at the landy etc.

Cheers for your help!

Ahhhhh! I bought the whole complete tensioner, not the bearing kit.. An hour meks sense now!;) Sorry fer laffin Batty..

Thought I'd add my tuppence!

I had an engine squeak so assumed it was the tensioner. Replaced the bearing and the squeak changed. Turned out it was my power steering pump on it's way out. The squeak certainly sounded like it was coming from the top pulley though so may be worth checking.

There are marks on the tensioner that tell you if the belt is too worn and HB's right, it's the only thing that puts tension on the belt.

If it is the tensioner, it's dead easy to change. If you go down the bearing route, the spring clip is a bit fiddly but other than that, a satisfying fix

If the squeaking continues after changing the tensioner then you can try the trick of putting a coin between the tensioner and head at about the 9 o clock position .
I cured the squeak in my sisters 300 Tdi by slackening the bolt holding the tensioner to the head and placing a blade from a feeler gauge between tensioner and head - running from 11 o clock to about 7 o clock if that makes sense . That was last June and all has been quiet since .
The noise is often caused by pulleys slightly out of line .
The blade I used was .8mm IIRC.

Re the belt squeal, before you change bearing, check for play, if no play in bearing then examine the tensioner, there is a nylon washer fitted between the two halves. that is the part that is fixed and the part that moves to tension the belt. If that has worn apreciably, you can compare the thickness with the side opposite then really you need to change the whole thing. As a temporary measure you can get a wiper blade reinforcing strip, cut off about 30mm strip, and bend approx 6mm end at 90deg, then fit bent end into gap between halves at top secure to fixed part of tensioner by passing under hose clip then bending back on itself and fully tighten hose clip, this will lasr quite a while, and can be inspected for wear, dont leave too long as the front edge of belt will get worn rapidly when tensioner body half wears away. :) HTSH
